I thought this was one of the most powerful parts of the book. Going for help and ending up walking, barefoot, for countless miles, being completely alone and exposed, no supplies…and feeling the spirit of Deets just when he couldn’t go further.

Neighborhood pool opened for the season yesterday. Neighbors we can’t stand camped out there all day yesterday. Then were back at 8 AM today and had a celebration there at lunchtime and stuffed a bunch of kids full of food and cake. One kid vomited in the pool. They packed up their stuff and left. We reported it to the HOA so they could get the pool guy out. Rep from the HOA says “the pool filters will cycle it out in an hour” and “the chlorine will kill any bacteria”. I am mildly infuriated that the HOA doesn’t think this necessitates a visit from the pool maintenance company to get the chunks cleaned out. I don’t fault the kid for barfing because shit happens and she’s like five. Needless to say, I don’t think I’ll be going to the pool anytime soon.
