Band Removal Paralysis

Three month old quaker parrot. a little gem named Mr. Snug (because he’s so snuggly).

Dremel tool used by a Bad Vet, for right foot metal band removal, burnt one leg very bad this past Monday.

Sixth day of paralysis, and today foot discoloration.

I do have him on a number of medications, including anti-inflammatory and pro-circulation. Antibiotic. Pain.

Not sure about his recovery prospects.

We are not worthy of these creatures, stupid humans who are careless.

Quaker parrot leg burn & paralysis from metal band removal

My 3-month-old male Quaker parrot had his metal leg band removed from his right leg this past Monday. A Dremel tool was used to grind/cut off the band.

Before the procedure, he could perch and use the right foot. The band was not constricting. Immediately after the procedure, the right foot became paralyzed/nonfunctional. He could no longer perch or grip with that foot.

Timeline:

  1. Monday: metal leg band removed with Dremel/rotary tool. Immediate right foot paralysis afterward.
  2. Tuesday: skin near the former band site gilly yellowish & weeping.
  3. Wednesday: medial section of yellow area changed to red/raw skin, making the burn injury more obvious.
  4. Thursday: right foot paralysis continues.
  5. Since yesterday, I have had to start hand-feeding him because his intake declined.
  6. A different vet has now started medications and placed a bandage. Silver sulfadiazine/Silvadene ointment was placed under the bandage.
  7. Friday, constant sleeping. Hand feeding continues. Right foot paralysis continues..

The worst visible burn appears to be on the medial/inner side of the right leg at the former band site, high on the foot near the upper foot/lower leg transition, close to where the leg emerges from the feathers.

My main questions are medical/prognosis related:

A. What are the prospects for recovery of foot function after a burn in this location, where nerves/tendons/blood vessels pass into the foot?

B. If this is nerve injury from heat, swelling, or compression, what timeline would suggest reversible neuropraxia versus more permanent nerve damage?

C. What signs should I watch for that would suggest nerve recovery, such as toe twitching, withdrawal, sensation, weak grip, or improved foot placement?

D. What signs would suggest a poor prognosis, such as deep burn, tendon injury, vascular compromise, tissue death, or permanent paralysis?

E. What are the survival risks for a young Quaker with this type of burn injury, especially now that hand-feeding is needed?

Band removal paralysis

Got a beautiful male quaker recently. Perhaps 3 months old. Paid to have his band removed yesterday at a vet. A Dremel tool was used. Immediate results: Complete paralysis of the foot which had a band on. I don’t detect any breaks or dislocation. Clearly nerve damage or nerve shock.

He doesn’t deserve this. A Sweet snuggly male.
