Shinjuku Market, 1945 (colorized)

This is first black market to open after Japan's surrender in 1945, right at the east exit of Shinjuku Station.

It was run by a local yakuza boss named Ozu Kinosuke, advertised under the slogan "光は新宿より" ("Light comes from Shinjuku").

It was moved a few years later and became Golden Gai, which is today a tourist hotspot.

Kawasaki Port Pedestrian Submarine Tunnel, a 1100 meters long tunnel between two artificial islands

Original name in Japanese: 川崎港人道海底トンネル

It connects two artificial islands in Tokyo Bay which are filled with factories.

Its Northern end is in Chidori Park, where there are often rave parties since it's kind of a no man's land at night.

Illegal housing built under an elevated railway in postwar Tokyo

Those were built under the Tokyu Oimachi Line right after the end of the war (late 1940s), likely between Ookayama station and Midorigaoka station.

This cluster of residences beneath the Oimachi Line was completely demolished due to road widening construction in the late 2010s.

You can still find similar illegal housing in the Tokyo area, right North of Kokudo Station on the Tsurumi Line. I might post some pictures I took there if people are interested.

Hanging houses in Kiso-Fukushima

This is not the in the Fukushima you're thinking of, it's a remote town in the Kiso valley in Nagano prefecture.

This kind of house is called gakeya-zukuri (崖家造り) which translates as cliffside house. They're somewhat common in remote undeveloped mountain towns in Japan, although they're disappearing fast.

If you search well, you can even find some along old canals around Tokyo! Search around Koyasu or Higashi-Kanagawa.

100 meters queue in Lausanne to buy eclipse glasses

The optician seems to be the only place in town that has those glasses in stock.

I've also checked Ricardo, and people are paying up to 60 francs to buy them, this is insanity.

Anyway stay safe and don't stare at the sun with naked eye! If you don't have any, go to a crowded place you'll probably find someone who will lend you theirs for a minute so you can peek at the sun.
