Eastbound T-bane to Furuset a different side of Oslo?

I went to Furuset yesterday, and I was honestly surprised by how different it felt compared to other parts of Oslo.

The atmosphere, the shops, the restaurants, and the overall environment felt like a completely different world. There were lots of Middle Eastern restaurants and a much more multicultural atmosphere, which I wasn’t expecting to such an extent. Some parts also felt a bit more chaotic and less maintained than what I’m used to.

But something else really surprised me.
During my T-bane journey, there was a ticket inspection. One woman apparently hadn’t validated her ticket. When the inspectors approached her, she showed them the ticket, they validated it for her, and everyone just smiled and moved on.
I was sitting there thinking, Wait, what? Is that how ticket inspections work here?
Maybe I’m missing something about how the system works, but I found the whole situation quite strange.

I’m relatively new to Norway, so I’m genuinely curious: Is this normal in Oslo? And do other people notice such a big difference between the eastern and western parts of the city?

Hi everyone!

I am relocating permanently from Slovakia (EU) to Norway in July 2026 and I'm trying to understand whether it makes more sense to stay in the PAYE scheme or opt out and use ordinary taxation.

Situation:

  • EU citizen
  • Moving permanently to Norway on July 1, 2026
  • Full-time employment in Norway starting July 1
  • Annual salary: 930 000 NOK
  • Actual 2026 Norway salary will only be around 465 000 NOK since I'll only work 6 months in Norway during 2026
  • Before moving I will have freelancer income from Jan - Jun 2026 (~28k EUR taxable profit)
  • I will close the freelance business before moving

My understanding is:

  • PAYE = simple flat tax (25%) but no deductions
  • Ordinary taxation = progressive taxation + allowances/deductions

Since I will only earn ~465k NOK in Norway during 2026, I'm wondering if ordinary taxation could be in lower effective tax than PAYE.

So my goals are:

  • maximize monthly netto during Jul - Dec 2026
  • avoid tax surprises/refunds
  • avoid unnecessary Norway/Slovakia tax complexity

Questions:

  1. Would ordinary taxation likely be better in this situation?
  2. Can Skatteetaten adjust the tax card based on actual 2026 income (~465k NOK) instead of annualized salary (930k NOK)?
  3. Did anyone have a similar "half-year relocation" situation?
