Proposal: A Justin Posey BTME Reddit AMA

Justin has already done Q&As on X, YouTube, Discord, podcasts, radio, TV, and at Seeker Summit. Reddit would provide something those formats haven't: a place where we can ask questions directly, publicly, and in writing without moderators deciding which questions make it through. Even though Seeker Summit used attendee voting, the questions that got asked were still filtered through the interests and biases of the searchers participating.

There'd also be no need to create transcripts afterward, which has been an unfortunate necessity with previous recorded appearances. The questions and answers would already exist publicly, in writing, and in their original context. An AMA here wouldn't require Justin to answer everything. It would give him the opportunity to see the questions himself and choose which ones he wants to address directly.

Given how much BTME has evolved since launch, that kind of open format seems like it could clear up a lot of the post-launch ambiguities created by previous Q&A sessions. So, do you think a Justin Posey BTME Reddit AMA could be genuinely useful? If Justin agreed to do one, when would you prefer he do it? What questions would you most want him to answer in writing?

In this post I’m going to follow-up my earlier threads from a few months ago about contradictions and misinterpretations, the growing difficulty of trusting the structure of BTME as presented, and provide an explanation of the math Justin used to rationalize his decision of waiting a year to fix a correctable problem (the cipher). I've previously discussed at length how experiencing Beyond the Map’s Edge feels like an evolving maze of post-launch ambiguity. We're dealing with numerous interviews, shifting statements, premium products, and events, as well as selective communication that complicates the experience. The recent cipher update doesn't ease these concerns at all. Rather, it amplifies the growing difficulty of trusting the hunt's structure as presented to us. I'm not accusing the solvers of wrongdoing or claiming Justin acted with malicious intent. The current explanation we've received about the cipher solution simply raises earnest questions about transparency, fairness, and reliable narration.

Justin recently said the aired version of the cipher was materially harder than his designed version. He claims cameras started rolling early and captured two extra clock times that complicated his cipher. This explanation sounds reasonable until you compare it with his past statements. The contradiction here is glaring when you break down the timeline. Asking about the clocks would signal their importance to producers and potentially influence the final edit. If he didn't know what was airing, it's unclear how he knew enough to ask those questions.

Justin previously stated he didn't know what would air in the Netflix show. The cipher explanation implies he did ask production which clock times were going to air.

If he knew the broadcast differed from his design, he would have had the opportunity to correct it at once. Instead, searchers were left working with a defective puzzle for a year before any real intervention occurred. We saw a vague public nudge around month seven and a direct correction much later. Once the full correction was issued, the cipher was solved less than one month later. That sequence of events suggests his post-launch corrections heavily influenced the outcome.

Justin has repeatedly said there are no intentional red herrings in this hunt. That might be semantically true about his initial design. From a solver's perspective, unintentional red herrings function the same as planned ones. If extra clock times materially interfere with a cipher in a clue-bearing documentary, they ruin the cipher. Calling them incidental doesn't change their destructive effect on the solver's process. An accidentally placed landmine still explodes when someone steps on it.

This issue also brings back the contradictory loop about the hunt's required media. It's deeply frustrating to navigate these post-launch ambiguities when the boundaries stay so unclear. The situation required a public correction to clarify which clocks mattered. If the show didn't matter, searchers wouldn't have needed a correction about the broadcasted clocks.

We've been told the poem is enough and the show isn't needed. A cipher hidden in the show was clearly affected by production choices. The cipher couldn't be solved with just the book's contents.

The probability appendix provided to the community attempts to use math to justify the delayed cipher correction. It mostly proves how easy it is to build a mathematical model around a predetermined conclusion. The model relies on shifting populations to support various parts of the argument. When explaining why the cipher should have been solved, Justin used a tiny cohort of 50 to 75 people. However, when explaining why a public correction would be dangerous, Justin's model suddenly relies on a massive audience of over 100,000 active searchers. You cannot use a tiny group to prove one point and a massive group to excuse another without explaining the bridge between them.

The model says, by month seven, the field had a 74 to 86 percent chance of producing a solve. By month twelve, after “less is better,” the odds were near certain. The cipher went unsolved. That should weaken the model. The appendix argues that the false positive MARGAY must have been the dominant obstacle. It assumes this simply because the model predicted an 80 percent chance of a solution that didn't happen.

Imagine I hide a "free lemonade" stand in your neighborhood, handing out maps to seventy-five kids, and calculating an 80 percent chance someone finds it by noon. Noon passes, and nobody finds the stand. My math doesn't prove a scary dog blocked the sidewalk. It could easily mean the map was bad, the stand was hidden too well, or my math was simply wrong. That isn't how modeling works. If your model says something is likely, or certain, and it doesn’t happen, there are multiple possibilities.

This connects directly to concerns raised months ago about private groups and public belief. I'm not saying anyone cheated or didn't earn their solution. When a group perceived as having personal access solves a cipher right after direct public guidance, the optics are terrible. The first announcement appeared perfectly worded toward their specific bottleneck. People will naturally ask if a random group would have received the same sort of help at the exact same time. Nobody should apologize for asking reasonable questions about fairness. Who said life is fair? Justin said he wanted his hunt to be as fair as possible.

Now let's look at the math of perception regarding the statistical probability of a group solving the cipher, assuming a field of 250,000 searchers. First, under a completely equal-chance model, the odds that a specific small group solves the cipher are tiny.

If the associated group has twenty-five people:

25 / 250,000 = 0.01 percent

If the group has fifty people:

50 / 250,000 = 0.02 percent

If the group has one hundred people:

100 / 250,000 = 0.04 percent

Next, we can give a specific small group a massive effort multiplier to account for better coordination or instincts or something else entirely. Their statistical odds of solving first are still incredibly low under a neutral model.

This is the part people should sit with and really consider. A 50-person group could be 100 times more effective than the average searcher. Their chance of being a solver is still roughly 2 percent. They need an almost unnatural advantage to become the mathematically likely winner. Don’t misinterpret this either, as 2 percent in a crowd still gives you a relatively massive edge. The purpose of this thread isn't to guess the types of hypothetical advantages available to any group, so I'll move on.

Attorney John Genga discussed breach of contract concepts in treasure hunts at Treasure Con this year. The example was that a creator might market a hunt under specific terms and later contradict those representations. Searchers are right to ask if the structure matches what they entered when they spend months on a defective cipher. Justin's own admission of delayed intervention confirms participants were working from a materially different version of his intended creation. It becomes incredibly difficult to evaluate the hunt's integrity when the creator's explanations consistently conflict. What if any other "unintended" issues have yet to arise?

To reiterate a point from one of my earlier threads, another potential complication involves people close to Justin taking part in the hunt. In contests or promotions, those individuals close to the creator or organizer are typically sidelined to avoid conflicts of interest. Here, participation is explicitly allowed, and Justin has even formed personal post-launch relationships with searchers. The details are salacious and don't bear repeating. If one of those individuals were to find the treasure, it would be troubling to say the least.

The most frustrating part of the recent statement is the complete lack of a genuine apology. The document reads like a defense brief meant to rationalize poor decision-making. It models and then justifies why the community had to absorb the cost of a production mistake. Accountability would mean admitting the delay caused searchers to spend months working from bad assumptions. A sincere apology would simply acknowledge the mistake and take full ownership of the resulting confusion. Instead, we received probability tables justifying why withholding a broad correction was the responsible path.

This cipher issue isn't an isolated incident within the hunt. It represents a larger pattern of post-launch ambiguity, unclear boundaries, uneven information, and delayed corrections. The creator's own admissions make it fair to question whether this is merely messy communication or something more serious. I think it's reasonable to expect clarity and fairness in a hunt we've invested so much time in because we were promised those two things.
