Really killer show, was so glad to finally cross them off the bucket list! Spoon Benders were an awesome opener, Red Fang’s set was a BLAST, and The Sword sounded far better than I’d anticipated after seeing people discuss their live performances. Kyle is one hell of a guitarist and J.D. sounded pretty damn close to the records. Hoping this is a sign of new material from both!
For context, I’m a pretty voracious stoner/doom/sludge nerd…the three bottom rows are what I would say represents the more “extreme”/niche sides of my taste. I’m confident I’ve scoured those genres pretty deeply, but feel free to recommend some lesser known bands from them as well.
I’ve been slowly getting into death, thrash, and black (ex. Agalloch, forgot to add them oops). For as long as I’ve been listening to metal, they haven’t really clicked for me beyond the big 4 of thrash, but the bands/albums at the top are the ones I’ve fallen in love with lately.
I’m looking for more like this. I’m usually focused on the riff and the groove, so that should be a starting point. I love a good earworm too, so there should be *some* sort of melody (grind isn’t really my thing besides maybe Soilent Green). I am also a musician myself, so I’m usually interested those “your favorite band’s favorite band” type groups - the ones who are really ambitious with their songwriting and musicianship. I grew into metal from a rock background so take that for what it’s worth I guess.
I’m familiar with the “bigger names” (i.e. CC, Napalm, Deicide, Behemoth, CoF, etc.) and I’m not really into them. I tend to dislike blatant gory, anti-religion/blasphemous, and politically-based lyrics because I usually don’t vibe with that. I’m more about introspection/abstract/philosophy/esoteric, power/strength/self-reliance, or fantasy/sci-fi.
Just looking here for something I’ve missed along the way, or maybe something I need to try again for it to really vibe. Cheers and thanks in advance!
