The events starting today are a mix of party mode, some stuff to unwind, and even a fundraiser if you want to offset the social footprint of your drug consumption a bit.

I'm writing this prior to reading what the other mods have posted so not sure if any of them included this. After being canceled last year due to the crazy winds that we were getting, Westerpark is being transformed by artworks produced by Heleen Blanken and Jaco Schilp. Heliotrope you might already know if you've been to The Chapel at Draaimolen a few years back, or more recently at Michael Bibi his shows (?!) of all places. Jaco Schilp is one of the minds behind events like Uncloud and does the stage design for a lot of festivals including Orbit. If you're one of those people that wants to know what they are getting into read this description for Jaco's work, or just get immersed in it, I've been told it's very good.

07:30–00:00 | ZERØBPM: Ambient Meditation Ritual

Lineup: Loradeniz, Out Of Place Artefacts (Rødhåd & .VRIL, live), Portable (live), Fadi Mohem, Nastia + more. Tickets are sold per timeslot.
Where: Thomaskerk

Returning to the Thomaskerk is ZEROBPM, this year with even more collaborations than last year. The entire weekend you can head over there for some of the best ambient in the gorgeous setting of a brutalist church. I have not been myself but it is a place that takes ambient serious. That means no yapping, no dancing but actually going for an introspective experience guided by the music.

For Friday my personal pick would be Out of Place Artefacts by Rodhad and .Vril. I've seen them play twice under their OOPA project and both times are amazing. They produce some crazy soundscapes and I'd say that their sound is characterized by different layers doing different things. Super fast high pitched bleeps paired with a kick drum that might go at 60bpm, merging together slowly and then pulling apart again. Nimbus MM is my favourite track of theirs but just listen to that whole album and you're set for a good hour. They recently also released a new album which I am listening to at the moment and continues the trend beautifully.

Second time's the charm! After not taking place last year, Ogazon is taking over another venue for a breakfast get-together. This time taking place on Friday, I expect the vibes to be a lot different than on a Saturday. More breakfast people and less people that have been going for a whole night already. Seems like the perfect opportunity to kick off your ADE with breakfast, house, and hopefully some sunshine.

Remember that crazy windy tapestry artwork that we've seen in De School, and more recently in an XXL configuration during Fred Again..'s tour? Well that installation is being placed in the Centrale Markthal for ADE. During the evenings there are also concerts taking place with Kiani del Valle playing on Friday.

What: Audiovisual installation by Tharim Cornelisse
Where: Oude Kerk

What I like about churches: They look cool, cool echo's, they are old. You know what would sound awful in a church cause of the acoustics? That's right, techno. However that is not this party, with minimal collective offering music that leaves room to breathe and plays into the architecture and acoustics that a church offers. During the day there will be an audiovisual experience (not sure what falls under that), with the visual aspect being filled in by a new installation by Tharim Cornelisse. "Using images and sound recordings from the Oude Kerk as source material, the work transforms elements of the building into an evolving audiovisual composition." See other promoters? This is how you write about what will take place at a party, instead of your AI party description slop. Sound is delivered by Kantarion Sound. Even the seating supplier Cote&ciel is listed which makes me anticipate not just a warm bath for my eardrums, but also for these tired ADE buttocks. They are really taking it seriously here to list all artists that are working on the event, next thing you know we'll read who built the club floor to make it extra bouncy.

Every year DJ Bone curates a lineup of all-star DJ's, and all profits go to support homeless people. One of the rare opportunities where platforms are actually being used for something good, besides posting stories of tragedies for attention. All DJ sets are 1 hour so don't expect Kevin Saunderson to showcase his storytelling skills.

Slimfit you might know as Poing resident with an affection for all kinds of booty shaking music. For this performance she is exploring the sounds of the African and Caribbean diaspora through a hybrid live performance. It's taking place in Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder, an old hidden church in the centre of Amsterdam. I'd expect her to go less explosive than we might know of her and offer more of an introspective listening experience, but that is purely based on what I'd expect of that setting.

YES YES YES! French II is finally getting more recognition for how good he is, and I can't wait to see him play more solo shows and big venues. He was one of the highlights of Draaimolen past year for many. His tracks keep coming back in my liked songs and I couldn't be happier to see him on more lineups in the coming months. For those that are still unfamiliar with him (shame on you!!), French II blends a ton of UK, bass, and techno sounds together into this super cool sound that I would say reminds me a bit of some timedance or REEF releases? Check out his own EPs if you haven't already, they're amazing.

She is joined by Ineffekt, Aurora Halal b2b Sedeff Adasï, and Verraco. I adore the diversity and range that all of these artists bring. This lineup oozes 'weird curveball presented to big ass stage that works like a charm'. Aurora Halal is a master at putting a danceable groove into whatever undanceable track she finds, and Avalon Emerson is even better at this. Last year I went to de Bajer for the first time

Love that they made a bit more of an experimental studio night for Friday! It is definitely noticed. If I didn't already plan on going Sunday then this night would be my pick. Honestly the list of good names on here is LONG, with stuff like Pariah and Richard Akingbehin, Rodhad, Luke Slater, DVS1, Kittin and the Hacker, Twiena, Wata Igarashi, I could go on.

What I realized as well is how DVS1 felt like an off booking at RAUM during their first ADE, but now does not stand out at all and seems really fitting to me. Cool to see how that has progressed. One thing I would like though is some live sets! I've only seen ONE live set in RAUM's history which is a shame!!

Here we are again, I believe this is the third or fourth time that I am writing a specific Draaimolen special for you all to read (and push my music taste onto you without your consent). I’ve obsessively gone through a lot of the lineup to feature some of my own favourite new artists down below. I’ve grouped them by day this time so that you folks that only go 1 day (boooooo!!!) can sort your schedule out more easily with some new stuff. These picks are just a very limited slice of what the program has to offer and is primarily catered to my own music taste. Don’t want any of you come at me with ‘WHY IS ACT XYZ NOT IN THERE THEY ARE MY FAVOURITE’.
For some of the stuff in here I have been pointed in the right direction by some of the stage hosts and programmers of Draaimolen. Many thanks for that!

Friday

Colombian Drone Mafia & Debit (Live); The Pit; 12:00-14:00
One of my newest discoveries from the lineup simply because of the name first, and besides that because of the gorgeous ambient that they have released. Colombian Drone Mafia is actually an alias of Nyksan, who is one of the founders of TraTraTrax. Within his releases you can hear a lot of field recordings of birds, nature, cities, surrounded by these beautiful soundscapes that make your mind wander off. It feels like the soundtrack of a distant memory. 

The Necks; 13:00-14:15 and 14:45-16:00; Moon
A Jazz band?? At Draaimolen? Never say never. Last year we had Xiaolin at this spot and this year another dream booking of the Festival’s bookers. The Necks are a jazz trio that operate in between jazz, minimal, ambient, and very psychedelic. I have to admit I am not knowledgeable enough about The Necks their legacy and history but I love this type of booking at this slot. They will be playing two sets, no clue what the difference between the two will be, but there is plenty of time to pass by and cut your weirdest shapes in the dancefloor. 

Varuna Agosti; 12:00-15:00; The Tunnel
One of the newest talents from the Amsterdam scene, I have recommended Varuna plenty of times before and with good reason. An artist that is obsessed with sound design and combines a ton of old and new tracks in her sets. There appears to always be an element of dub techno hidden in her tracklist, and I am super curious how she will shape The Tunnel’s dancefloor for three hours. 

Michelle Manetti; 14:30-16:00; Forest Rave
Described as ‘East London Royalty’, owner of an amazingly styled mullet, and resident of Adonis (the London one, not the Biddinghuizen one). While I was out on my soundcloud discovery run for this post, one specific set stood out to me right away. ‘Live from the Pleasure Dome’ at GALA festival, Michelle their set is pure afternoon festival euphoria. High energy, super euphoric, mixing an italo disco track into a bollywood vocal, back to italo and into this super progressive high energy house music again. Absolutely amazed and think this will be the first dancefloor of the festival to truly pop off. 

Wheel of Fortune (CCL x Marylou x NoNo Gigsta x Rroxymore); 16:00-19:00; The Pit
I sincerely hope that there will be a wheel of fortune type setup with the four DJ’s faces on there, together with a paired genre that they have to play something from. It’s a shame we don’t have the same UFO setup from last year over the pit because I could see some real potential for an attachment above there. Or maybe a crowd vote could take place with that new windy net that is above it, and we have to run over to the quadrant of what we want to hear.
In an interview CCL actually mentioned that to perfect their mixing and to keep themselves on their toes, they sometimes randomly select two tracks from their USB and then try and mix the two. I hope they have the balls to do that too.
But all jokes aside, these are four of the DJ’s that can mix water and oil with ease, paired with the depth of their record bags this could push into very interesting pairings of music that we can’t fathom unless we are there in The Pit with them.  
Cola Ren & K-Lone (live); 16:00-17:00; Moon
An early live set at Moon, with Guangzhou local Cola Ren pairing up with K-Lone. This show has been especially commissioned for Draaimolen, and Cola Ren is bringing her trumpet for this especially. Check out her instagram for some recordings from Rural in Japan. Her productions jump in between ambient, jazz, and more delicate leftfield. I love the use of the trumpet and dreamy nature field recordings that span through most of her tracks. She is pairing up with K-Lone, who you might know from his label Wisdom Teeth. His productions offer a lot more danceability and punch, so I’m very very curious how they’ll complement eachother. 

Dimitri; 17:30-19:00; Forest Rave
Fun fact: my first pill and electronic music experience was a 10 hour Thuishaven party yeeeaaaarrs ago. Since then Dimitri has actually held a special place for me, and after learning more about him and his story I have only grown fonder of him.
For those who do not know him, he is one of the first DJ’s that pushed house music to the forefront after becoming a resident at the legendary club RoXY and later also at Trouw. He is basically a living memory of the entire Amsterdam house scene, having lived through it all and being at the core of it.
His story does not only know positive sides. In 2013 he had to have his leg amputated after a serious bacterial infection. This put him into serious financial problems, after which club Trouw organized a benefit night for him so that he didn’t have to sell his house. 5 months afterwards he was back to playing. He’s also spoken very openly about his cocaine addiction, shining a light on the darker side of nightlife. After having hit rock bottom, he got totally clean and completely refound his love for music. If you want to know more look up ‘De Negen Levens van Dimitri’, a vice documentary. 

Doltz (Live); 18:00-19:00; The Tunnel
One of the names from Japan that has made its way through the grapevine through a liveset in Norway at Monument. Fast-paced, trippy, lots of switch and turns. Check out their monument recording for a feel. 

Kevin Saunderson b2b Surusinghe; 19:00-21:00; Moon
A pairing that I would have never expected. Kevin Saunderson is one of the godfathers of techno, having formed the Belville Three together with Juan Atkins and Derrick May, while Surusinghe is a new girl on the block that most people know for having an affection for bass. Their connection might seem random, but Surusinghe actually was his manager for many years at the agency that represented him. Finally getting a chance to play together I feel like we will see a whole new side of both perhaps. 

Eris Drew b2b Objekt; 21:00-23:00; Forest rave
Both don’t really need an introduction but the pairing definitely does. Eris Drew only plays vinyl, and because of this Objekt will be doing his first full vinyl set in 7 years. I am curious what cards Objekt has up his sleeves as I know him best for creative CDJ mixing that loops you through all BPM ranges before you know it. After Covid he completely switched to digital DJ’ing, but he is allegedly very excited to finally get to dust off his vinyl collection again. Wonder how that turns out but I have good faith that these two will make it work. 

DATAPUNK (hybrid) presented by Anthony Rother; 21:00-22:30; Moon
Last June, Anthony Rother re-released his DATAPUNK album, and especially for Draaimolen he will be performing a hybrid version of it on the Moon stage. It has been over 10 years since he last performed his DATAPUNK project, but for a rare occasion he is back. Gritty, electro, punchy, playful, dark and atmospheric all at once, that’s how I would describe DATAPUNK. 

Darwin b2b Mama Snake; 19:00-21:00; The Tunnel
Perhaps my two favourite DJ’s being paired together. Many people don’t know it but Darwin actually used to be a techno DJ before she went down her REEF and bass direction most people know her for today. She held a residency at Griessmuehle for a few years but eventually got bored of techno and started to drift in more experimental dubstep and bass directions. I highly, HIGHLY recommend checking out her Reclaim Your City, and Bassiani podcasts to listen to how she plays techno. I have seen her close down Berghain the first time I went and it’s one of my top 10 sets ever.
She is paired with Draaimolen mainstay Mama Snake. Perhaps the DJ that has played the most stages (I think she only missed Forest Rave and The Pit so far), I expect them to go down a real spooky techno road for this. Apparently they have been preparing this together for months and couldn’t be more excited. This could just be the best the Tunnel will have to offer this weekend in my opinion.

BABY BRING THE FUCKING MILK

21:30-23:00; Djrum x Riko Dan; The Pit
Master turntablist Djrum paired up with East London MC Riko Dan? Yes please. I’ve seen Djrum plenty of times by now and every time he surprises me with what direction he goes with for his set, but being paired with a live MC brings a whole new dimension to all of this. Hoping for some nasty rewinds that end up being a part of the mix when you least expect it. 

Shygirl Live; 21:30-22:30; Strobe
Perhaps the biggest name on the lineup and a world premiere for Draaimolen, Shygirl will be performing her new album for the first time ever on the biggest stage Draaimolen has to offer. Really special for such a big artist to do a world premiere in Tilburg. 

Low Jack b2b R3ign drops; 23:00-00:30; The Pit
The closing that all fans of experimental bass should look out for. Low Jack has been setting out a new course for bass and grime music from Paris with very deep cuts, check out his mixtape with Cav Empt to get a feel for him. Draaimolen has paired him with R3ign Drops, a crazy talented Kampala based DJ that jumps between bass, gqom, afro tech, and everything else that has originated from those genres. 

Re:ni b2b Simo Cell; 23:00-00:30 (or maybe 1:00?)
Simo Cell is coming off an amazing album he released earlier this year and is paired with one of the most gifted producers, DJ, and Timedance mainstay Re:Ni. I actually saw Simo Cell last March in Shenzhen and while I like his productions I have to say I really didn’t enjoy his set back then. It was too glitchy and hard to dance to, but now being paired with Re:Ni I expect her to put some good pace behind what they play. 

Introspekt b2b Jeremy Sylvester; 23:00-00:30; Forest Rave
New kid on the block Introspekt pairing up with speed garage legend Jeremy Sylvester. 

Saturday

Batu; 12:00-16:30; Aura
Opening his own stage, he does need an introduction. Can’t wait to slowly get slapped in the face with groove from the man himself. 

Ben Vince 15:30-16:30; Moon
New discovery for me and by no means an expert in his music but found some crazy diversity in the tracks on his albums. Featuring church choirs, free jazz solos, indie band sounding vocals mixed with chimy bits, super interesting elements all together in the mix. His album Street Druid has some tracks on it that span the perfect energy level between sitting down at Moon while tripping, and slowly getting you on your feet and swaying away for an hour. 

MMM; 14:30-16:30; The Pit
an alias of Berghain resident Fiedel and Errorsmith, with an early slot in the pit. Having met in 1994 they brought out their debut EP 30 (!!!) years ago in 1996. Their second release Donna samples the disco-tracks of Donna Summer and is often seen as an anticipation of the electro sound of the 2000s. Nous Sommes is an absolutely legendary track that everyone has heard if they have been inside of a club for long enough. My favourite of them is Que Barbaro which mixes crazy catchy guitar and drums with these super big sounding glitchy synths. Given the TraTraTrax stage they are on I expect them to pull out whatever track has elements of salsa, cumbia, or whatever latin music genre you can come up with. High energy rave tracks produced by nerds. 

Deetron (Live); 16:30-17:30; Strobe
Everybody is playing his productions this summer, and now he’s here to perform live for the first time in ten years. 

Full Circle; 16:30-19:00; Moon
One of my new discoveries that I made while going through the entire timetable, celebrating more downtempo that pushes down the BPM’s instead of up. More than a year ago I made a post asking if there were any downtempo parties still happening in Amsterdam, and there was a very limited response with just a few parties that play more deep house below 120bpm. This perfectly scratches that itch that keeps it below 100 bpm for almost the entire mix.  In their mixes I hear influences of goa, psychedelic, and even a ton of trancey tracks that I heard Philippa Pacho play but pitched down to maybe 40% of its original speed. 

Donato Dozzy b2b job Jobse; 17:30-20:00; Strobe
Sundown with two of the biggest names you can put on a dance festival stage. A weird combination that only Draaimolen could come up with, have the balls to propose, and also get these two to agree to it. I personally love how Jobse gets pushed into a different spot each time but this one at first sounded totally bizarre to me. HOWEVER, when listening to releases by Dozzy like this (thanks Milo) it actually starts to make more and more sense to match these two. I have Jobse in very very high regard as being one of the best selectors with an absolutely astonishingly deep record bag and I think that we can get some real magic between these two if it goes in the Hypno Trance 0 direction. 

DJ Ramon Sucesso; 17:30-18:30; The Pit
One of the craziest mixers from Brazil. You might have seen him pass on your timeline if you are in the Atsuo the Pineapple Donkey, weird Brazilian parties, or Butuuni Sound. Check out his art of the DJ for a more indepth look into his crazy mixing. One of those DJ’s that more resembles a live set than a DJ set when they play. 

Adam Marshall & Ricardo Tobar present Labrador (live); 19:00-20:00
Getting perhaps the most beautiful sundown slot at Moon are these two argentinians with a combined follower amount of less than 2000 on their socials, and having never toured outside of Argentina. This was the first discovery I made from the lineup this year and I absolutely love their release ‘Our Violence’. Ricardo has already brought out a debut on James Holden his label. It brings back progressive in this extremely tasteful fashion that fits perfectly on Nous’Klaer. News flash, they will be bringing out a release on that label at the end of this year. Their tracks sound exactly like how a Nous’Klaer closing would sound, slightly melancholic, super well produced, a bit trancey, and sucks you in. 

Metrist (live) 19:30-20:30; Aura
Right when we are about to enter the night Metrist is pulling off a live set that I think will make those Sinai stacks work for their money. If you’re unfamiliar with Metrist, he has brought out a trilogy on Timedance, with the latest release being Pollen Pt III, an EP that blurs the lines between techno, bass, and I would personally say truly feels like Timedance. People often say that Timedance has this weird cinematic feel to a lot of its tracks and this EP is a prime example. Every track has UK influences sprinkled throughout, with traces of juke, footwork, dubstep, and much more. It’s high energy madness that pushes up the BPM’s and constantly making you think WTF is going to be around the next corner. 

DJ Lomalinda b2b Phillip Jondo; 12:00-14:30; The Pit
DJ Lomalinda is one of the founders of TraTraTrax and is pairing up with long time friend Phillip Jondo for the first time. On the must-see list of the TraTraTrax crew. 

Bashkka b2b Jerome Sydenham; 18:00-20:00; Forest Rave
Jerome Sydenham is one of the key figures of the New York house scene from the 90s. He’s renowned for his production skills by people like Kerri Chandler, Joe Claussell, Carl Craig, Seth Troxler, and many more. Furthermore he has been running Ibadan Records since 1995, first from New York and later from Berlin. He will be teaming up with BASHKKA, who finds her origins in the New York ballroom scene, and has been one of the most applauded house DJ’s of the past few years. I love this combination of bringing together the old and new. 

French II live; 18:30-19:30; The Pit
From putting up fences at the first few editions to playing a live set primetime in The Pit, prepare for French II. For years he has worked behind the screens in the production of the festival, and has played a few times both as DJ and with the live group project A#. I love French II his productions and it’s a shame he doesn’t perform as often anymore. For this set he is bringing in some hardcore sauce together with what you would usually expect from him. 

Weird Baile; 19:00-20:30; The Pit
I was totally unfamiliar with these guys prior to asking the Pit curators what I should be looking out for, and even after having listened to their soundcloud I have no clue what to expect. Weird Baile was formed by JLZ, VHOOR, DJ RaMeMes and Mu540, and are playing in Europe for the first time. Their rise to fame in Brazil came through releasing remixes on Soundcloud and they now have quite a huge following there. They take Brazilian funk and completely remix it with video game references, pop edits, basically every sample they can get their hands on. Please listen to their soundcloud cause it’s pretty crazy. Every track that you hear you will hear at least some element that you recognize but can’t place whether it’s from a nintendo, baile track, reggaeton edit, or a random street noise sample. 

Hyperverbena (Hybrid); 20:30-21:30; The Pit
When i first looked at the lineup, the first thing i looked for was which crazy b2b Verraco was going for. Only after looking further I found that Hyperverbena is in fact Verraco and Lechuga Zafiro, two of the founders of TraTraTrax. Hyperverbena is a new project of them that they have already premiered at places like Primavera and Berghain, and is now making its way to the Pit. Check their instagram for a short preview, it looks fucking raw. Live drums, four cdj’s mixed in live, insert latin genre - electronic music genre hybrid here, and whatever distorted stuff they can get their hands on. 

Goth-trad; 20:30-22:00; Aura
Bridging the gap between Metrist and Polygonia comes Goth-trad, Japapese dubstep royalty that is sure to basically make the Sinai stacks explode. If you want to hear the Sinai system be brought to its full potential this will be the sundown slot to go for. 

Polygonia, Simon Popp (Live); 22:00-23:00
Another special live set, after sundown at Aura with Polygonia and Simon Popp. Polygonia needs no introduction but Simon Popp might be a less familiar name to many here. He is actually one of the most gifted drummers in the world, and will be bringing his whole drum kit to play together with Polygonia. Most festivals would shy away from the logistical nightmare of bringing in a whole drum kit during primetime, but Draaimolen is taking the leap. Contrary to the sets that you can find online, they are preparing a full hour of harder dancefloor focussed music. One of the most unique acts that you can see this year (or maybe ever)

Adiel b2b Garcon; 23:00-00:30; Moon
A combination that people might see as not making sense, but when you dive deeper into Adiel you will find that she actually held a residency at Goa in Rome. Before she became a techno queen she used to play a lot more trippy and psychedelic. Garcon runs Amenthia recordings and does not need an introduction for Ratherlost fanboys. Can’t wait to see what dark trip they’ll send me on with that new Moon stage design. 

Lena Willikens b2b ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U; 22:30-00:30; Strobe
When I first heard that this was the secret b2b I actually did not really believe it. The Japanese wonderboy that blew up cause of his Boiler Room, being paired with Lena Willikens? When you look further into them they actually have more in common than one might think, but I am still not sure where they will find a middle ground in their track catalogue.  

Jasmín b2b Amoral; 22:30-00:30; The Tunnel
Two local stars that usually get put on opening slots unfortunately but that deserve so much more. I have been a fan of Jasmín for a while now and I´ve talked about why in plenty of weeklies. Amoral has been on a crazy wild ride since covid reopening, and is getting one of Berghain´s favourites even. Recently she did her first closing and smashed that apparently, so this should be a wild ride. 

DJ Playero; 23:00-00:30; The Pit
We’ve had big names in the past on a slot similar to this one. Skrillex being perhaps the biggest they have ever had, but never has there (to my knowledge) been a DJ with as big of an impact on worldwide music as DJ Playero has had. DJ Playero is often seen as the creator of Reggaeton, and with it all the musical genres that found its origins in the Puerto Rican genre. He started his career off with producing mixtapes to promote his parties in San Juan. Mixtape 37 is often seen as the first reggaeton mix. He was the first to produce for Daddy Yankee and launched his career, which would later go global with his track Gasolina. More recently he has produced for the likes of Rauw Alejandro, and Bad Bunny has directly references his work on his most recent albums. Honestly go read the 3voor12 article that came out on him, you might not have heard the name but this is my favourite booking of recent times by far.
