[PubQ] First call with an agent

So, I got my first ever full request (cue adrenaline rush), and she wants to have a call. What sort of questions should I be asking? I’ve heard things like, “This is you interviewing the agent” but really have no idea what to do next!

[QCrit] Advanced Studies, contemporary romance, 87k (second attempt)

Hey, friends. Still no traction on this after 20-ish queries. I made some improvements based on feedback here last time, I would love some input on my revised version.

ADVANCED STUDIES is a sports/college queer romance about two unlikely people falling in love lust-first. A classic tale of grumpy and sunshine with a sizzling twist, it's perfect for readers who enjoyed the spice and dynamic of Ali Hazelwood's DEEP END, and the queer hockey of it all in Rachel Reid's GAME CHANGER. It is complete at 87,000 words, with series potential.

Alex is a loveable himbo in his sophomore year at Princeton, waiting for his call-up to the NHL. Not sure that love is something on the cards for him, he responds to an online dating profile of a man looking for a casual submissive. After an initial fiery hookup, he's all in.

Masters student Noah isn’t looking for love, either—he's just trying to make it through the semester without another panic attack. When he walks into his history discussion group as the teaching assistant, he’s shocked to see last night's fling sitting in the first row.

Alex is torn between his future as a professional sports star and his desire to be authentically himself. Having Noah be effortlessly in control in the bedroom and the classroom is confusing—are they boyfriends or not? And since when did Noah's influence mean he actually cares about all this college stuff?

Noah's life is piling up in his head: the demands of his studies and the looming specter of his father's illness threaten to derail him—he needs to get back some control. Too bad Alex is so guilelessly charming that he can't help falling for him. Not to mention the fact that they'll both be expelled if their fraternising becomes public knowledge.

I'm an Australian writer who loves to explore transgression in fiction—the more rule-breaking, the better! I have undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in comparative literature, and writing and editing.

[QCrit] ADVANCED STUDIES (adult contemporary romance, 87k) first attempt

Hi, team

After some feedback on this query letter!

Dear agent,

I'm pleased to pitch ADVANCED STUDIES, a crossover sports/college queer romance about two unlikely people falling in love lust-first. It has a high spice level and is complete at 87,000 words, with series potential.

Hockey prodigy Alex Woulfe didn't mean to sleep with the TA for his Ivy League history class--he was just looking for some casual fun with a hot dom--but could his forbidden hook up with Noah Levy turn into something so much more?

Alex Woulfe is a loveable himbo in his sophomore year at Princeton, muddling through classes and waiting for his call-up to the NHL. Bored in class one afternoon, he responds to an online dating profile of a man looking for a casual submissive. After an initial fiery hookup, he's all in.

Noah Levy is a history masters student, and he's not looking for love -- he's just trying to make it through the semester without another panic attack. When he walks into his Tuesday afternoon history discussion group as the teaching assistant, the last thing he expects is to see last night's fling sitting in the first row.

Alex and Noah navigate a casual relationship that very quickly takes the shape of something more. Alex is pretty sure he has a boyfriend; Noah is holding Alex at arm's length to maintain some plausible deniability while they're still student and teacher.

As their physical intimacy and trust in each other grows, so do their feelings for each other, despite the nagging uncertainty of their future. Noah is coping with anxiety about his future and his present as his ill father gets worse back home. Alex is trying to decide what matters more: his future as a professional sports star or his desire to be authentically himself.

A classic tale of grumpy and sunshine with a sizzling twist, Alex and Noah have the physical down to an art--now, they'll need to learn to trust each other and open their hearts to love.

ADVANCED STUDIES is perfect for readers who enjoyed the spice and dynamic of Ali Hazelwood's DEEP END, the himbo with a heart of gold in Elle Kennedy's OFF CAMPUS, and the queer hockey of it all in Rachel Reid's GAME CHANGER.
