Harem is hated, and yet there are numerous beloved titles with in-depth discussions.

Harem is a largely disliked genre that still has numerous titles that are beloved and praised with Quintuplets being one of them. But whether it’s criticisms or defence a lot of the time they say the only appeal of harem anime is self insertion, wish fulfilment and fanservice. And that the characters fall in love for no reason.

And yet in spite of this however, throughout the years harem fandoms like Quintuplets go in depth on the story and characters, the reasons why they love each other, how the story is developing, writing essays on the characters psychology and how things are playing out just like any story. (link is an example)

I know that there is plenty of slop out there, but sometimes I see genuinely good harem shows like Quintuplets get trashed on just because its a harem. That its only appeal is self insertion and that characters fall in love for no reason even though these fandoms go so much in on how the story that clearly showcase the contrary.

We Never Learn, and The World God Only Knows, and Saekano, etc. (more link examples). A lot of the time all these fandoms and many such others, all they do is talk about the depth of the story and characters, with simple wish fulfilment and such not really being what’s on their mind. But even those titles along with Quintuplets will get dragged down and accused of being just nothing more than just that when that clearly isn’t the case.

There's also a difference between "nice with ulterior motives" and "kind for the sake of being good", with MCs being more of the latter but get lumped in with the former regardless, which isn't accurate. It's not just that, but also along with good growing chemistry that started with initial attraction of some form that builds the bonds between characters over time. When executed well and not poorly, of course.

But what do you make of this?
