The match was Uruguay's first appearance in the South American Championship (now Copa América), ending in a 4-0 victory over Chile in Buenos Aires.

In the aftermath, Chile lodged a protest, claiming that Black Uruguayan players Isabelino Gradín and Juan Delgado were "illegal African players" and therefore ineligible to represent Uruguay. CONMEBOL swiftly rejected the complaint.

The incident is remembered as one of international football's earliest racial controversies and an early example of Black players representing a national team at the highest level of international competition.

OTD in 1954 – Uruguay came back from 2-0 down against Hungary before eventually losing 4-2 after extra time in what many consider one of the greatest World Cup matches ever played.

So this was the reigning World Cup winners vs. the reigning Olympic champions, in a rain soaked classic in Switzerland that's still considered one of the most emotional semifinals of all-time.

Trailing 2-0 with 15 minutes left, Uruguay scored twice through Juan Hohberg in the 75th and 86th minutes to force extra time.

Hohberg reportedly collapsed from heart failure after his equaliser and had to be revived. Not only that, but he played the entirety of extra-time. Hungary eventually won 4-2, but the semifinal became known as the original "Match of the Century" and remains one of the most dramatic games in World Cup history.

Today in 1970 – Pelé's famous dummy against Uruguay goalkeeper Ladislao Mazurkiewicz produced one of the most iconic moments in World Cup history.

Although Pelé never touched the ball, his move around Mazurkiewicz in the semifinal has been replayed for generations and remains one of football's greatest near-goals. The story became even better afterward. For years, Mazurkiewicz jokingly reminded Pelé that, despite everything, he had still managed to stop him from scoring.

Honestly, nothing comes close to the World Cup.

Even with some unpopular changes, I've been reminded again why nothing comes close to the World Cup. Every match has felt meaningful. Every chance or save has felt like it carried the weight of history. No matter how much club football I watch, there's something about the World Cup that's impossible to replicate.

Some detractors talk about the quality of football, but you just can't bottle the emotion this tournament creates. Even matches like New Zealand vs. Iran right now have been exhilarating simply because of how much is at stake. Every moment feels like it matters.

Do you think the MonsterVerse will eventually get its own "Destroy All Monsters" style finale?

I mean similar to Destroy All Monsters or even Final Wars? Both of those films felt like celebrations of their respective eras and brought together a huge cast of kaiju. I wonder if Legendary might eventually do something similar, not necessarily because the series is ending, but simply as a way to cap off this chapter of Godzilla with one massive event film.

I created an online museum dedicated to the history of Uruguayan football

Over the last few years, I've been collecting photographs, articles and historical documents related to Uruguayan football and recently put them together into a bilingual website in English and Spanish.

The site covers World Cups, Copa América tournaments, qualifiers and other international competitions, with archives spanning more than a century.

Hopefully some fellow football history enthusiasts will enjoy exploring it.

David Wise's Donkey Kong Country 2 soundtrack might still be one of the best in gaming history

Does anyone hold this soundtrack in high regard? I honestly think David Wise's soundtrack for DKC 2 might still be one of the greatest video game score ever composed, even decades later. It's unbelievable what he managed to accomplish on the Super Nintendo.

And, honestly, I don't think it's just nostalgia, as I've gotten really good feedback from people of all ages.

Godzilla vs Biollante's Osaka battle is still so impressive from the Heisei era

I still think the Osaka battle in Godzilla vs Biollante is one the most impressive sequences of the entire Heisei era. The rematch with Super X2 has stunning miniatures and I love how involved the human side is, with soldiers firing rockets inside the buildings. The sets are even better than in Godzilla '85, and the whole battle is beautifully lit at night, with the orange fire framing everyhting.

Does anyone else feel Biollante was the peak of that era in that regard?

FIFA reportedly tells Egypt to drop AFCON stars from World Cup kits

According to ESPN, the Egyptian FA has been informed that the seven stars above the national team crest, which represent Egypt's 7 AFCON titles, cannot be used during the 2026 World Cup. FIFA regulations reserve stars on national team shirts for World Cup victories or tournaments considered equivalent.

Interestingly, FIFA also asked that the squad numbers be changed from gold to white to improve visibility on broadcasts.

Uruguay remains a special case, with FIFA recognizing its Olympic football titles in 1924 and 1928 alongside its two World Cup victories, allowing La Celeste to continue wearing four stars. Those two Olympic tournaments remain the only competitions FIFA considers equivalent to a World Cup.
