My 6 week old is super sensitive to wet diapers and it’s hurting sleep

I was planning to start EC at some point but never thought it would be as early as 5 weeks. This is my first baby and I prepared with the top hat potty and the go diaper free book, but again, I wasn’t sure when I would be ready to start. My baby boy ended up being EXTREMELY fussy about a wet diaper. It got to the point where he would start crying out of no where and I would watch the line turn blue on his diaper. Around 5 weeks I figured I would start EC early and it turns out he LOVES it. I didn’t have to do naked observation time because it was so obvious when he had to pee. I get 95% of pees right now. I haven’t figured out his poop cues, but I’m sure that will come with time.

Now onto my predicament. He can’t get multiple long stretches at night because he wakes himself up when he pees. I do my best to make sure he pees before he goes back down to sleep, but we can’t get multiple stretches. It might be his age (almost 7 weeks), but we get one long stretch followed by a series of very short stretches. So he’ll be down from 9 to 1, followed by 2 to 4 and 5 to 5:30, 6 to 6:30… etc. Overall, it’s not terrible, but I’m looking for some tips for after the long stretch. I try and make sure he pees after feeding each time. He doesn’t always pee and it appears to not make a difference. He wakes up pissed with a wet diaper regardless…. I do end up feeding him every time he wakes up, mainly because he’s so upset. He’s definitely starving after the first long stretch but the other times it seems to be just a snack.

He typically wakes up and stretches and farts when we pull the swaddle off after about 6 am. I’m also currently on day three of the mom’s on call schedule for 4 to 8 week infants.

So is this an age thing or a pee problem?
