Hey all!
Thinking about life after a career in corporate, I was considering going back to my roots to make bike touring popular in the countryside locality I grew up in. We are talking about Southern Italian countryside, inside a protected national park, at cycling distance from seaside and in general with a very cheap cost of living. I was wondering - what are the must-haves you look for before choosing a destination for bike touring? Closest high speed train station is just a 20 kilometres away, but elevation is +700mt. Is this too much for the average tourer? The nature is amazingly good, including riverside spots, plenty of animals, and lower temperatures than nearby cities, but infrastructure can be a bit lacking (e.g., closest hospital 40 mins away). Roads are paved (gravel and MTB also possible) and not very trafficked but single-track only. Is this acceptable for the avg tourer?
To make it happen, I was imagining a mix of my own venturing (e.g., providing a camping facility, logistic support, etc.) and liaising with local authorities to build a general storytelling, building a tour brand, etc. Does it make sense? Any recommendations you feel like sharing?
