Training naturally fear-oriented prey animals

Hello, I am new to animal training and my goal with this question specifically is to reduce fear response in parent-raised white tailed deer at my zoo. Forgive me if I sound ignorant in how I word this as I am VERY new and looking for pointers and strategies in gaining the animal’s trust while working with them through a training regimen that will ultimately involve them approaching me with confidence for food (to then work on self-weighing, vet exams, etc.) rather than having to place their food down and leave (or else they will not eat in my presence). My boss has entrusted me in this, but I need help as my only experience is with animals that are domesticated so I feel there is not a roadblock in that action like I am experiencing now with ‘prey animals’. What have you done for similar species that has proven successful in building a connection?

My dog has cancer

I want to preface this that I am Not looking for veterinary advice!

I’m a first time dog parent (of course I grew up having dogs at home with my parents but have since moved away for college) so this is my first time having a dog that’s completely and totally my own responsibility. I adopted him about 4 years ago from the shelter where he was estimated to be older so he’s about 9 turning 10 now. About a year ago he was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor that was removed but has recently come back but is no longer removable. His oncologist recommends placing him on Palladia the at home chemotherapy drug but I’m nervous and would like to hear from other dog owners that are going through this experience. He’s happy and healthy currently and selfishly I want to keep him around for a very long time and his vet has said that it could or could not extend his lifespan plus or minus the potential for side effects that could make him sick. Just looking for some pointers and experience from other pet owners going through something similar! I love my old man with all my heart and can’t imagine anything happening to him as he is my entire life. Pic attached of my handsome boy!
