It has been a while since college and I am looking for a book that helps me get the most out of difficult texts. I am reading classics but I feel like I'm only getting a surface level understanding of Middlemarch.

Which to read first? Both are about Gary Gilmore, a criminal who demanded his own execution. The Executioner's Song is by Norman Mailer and Shot in the Heart is by Mikal Gilmore (Gary's brother). I was recommended both of them but now I don't know which one to start with.

I was hoping someone who has read both would know which one is the better introduction.
