We have a fairly light week coming up. Russian Championships are probably the biggest thing on the docket. You can see the rest of the week ahead here.

In terms of governance, this past week was a doozie.

FIG award ceremony rules amendments

The following was added to the FIG awards ceremony rules:

ARTICLE 13 – NEUTRALITY, DIGNITY AND PROTOCOL OF THE AWARD CEREMONY

The Award Ceremony shall remain strictly neutral and shall be conducted in a manner that preserves
the dignity, integrity and universality of sport.

No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted on the podium or
within the Award Ceremony area.

The display, carrying or wearing of any political, religious or racial symbol, sign, message, banner,
clothing, accessory or gesture is prohibited during the Award Ceremony.

The display of any flag other than the official national flags provided, approved or authorised by the
FIG is strictly prohibited.

Athletes, coaches, delegation members and other accredited persons participating in the Award
Ceremony shall respect the dignity, protocol and ceremonial requirements of the Award Ceremony
at all times. They shall comply with the instructions of the FIG and the LOC and shall refrain from
any conduct that may disrupt, undermine or bring the Award Ceremony into disrepute.

ARTICLE 14 – NON-COMPLIANCE AND DISCIPLINARY MEASURES

Any violation of these Rules governing Award Ceremonies may result in disciplinary and/or sporting
measures in accordance with FIG rules and regulations.

In particular, any conduct contrary to these Rules, including but not limited to failure to comply with
dress code requirements, protocol obligations, organisational instructions or behavioural standards
applicable to official Award Ceremonies, may result in sanctions including a warning, withdrawal of
accreditation, or any other measure deemed appropriate by the FIG.

Violations of Article 13 (Neutrality, Dignity and Protocol of the Award Ceremony) shall be considered
serious offences. Such violations may result in sanctions including disqualification of the athlete or
team concerned, cancellation of results, withdrawal of medals, titles or rankings, withdrawal of
accreditation, and any other measure deemed appropriate by the FIG.

For the purposes of Article 13, National Federations are responsible for ensuring compliance by their
athletes, coaches, delegation members and other accredited persons. Any violation of Article 13 by
a member of a delegation may result in disciplinary and/or financial measures being imposed on the
National Federation concerned, irrespective of fault or direct involvement of the Federation.

Irrespective of the above sanctions, the FIG reserves the right to initiate disciplinary proceedings
before the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation (GEF), which may impose additional sanctions, including
suspension from participation in FIG competitions and events for a specified period or number of competitions, in accordance with the applicable FIG rules and disciplinary procedures.

My personal opinion of this is that it’s a wild overreach and likely unenforceable. This would ban an athlete from wearing a hijab on the medal stand. You could argue that flags with a religious symbol shouldn’t be allowed (all kinds of crosses, Star of David, star and crescent). An athlete could be punished for doing the sign of the cross on the medal stand.

And that’s to say nothing of the insanity of telling children whose country is under invasion that they cannot react negatively to the anthem of their invader.
