Lifelong sci-fi lover and reader, and now in my 40s and just starting working my way through the concept for a novella (maybe a novel if I really get going). It’ll be a type of down-to-earth (not futuristic or drastically unrealistic) first contact / psychological thriller (horror?) first-hand experiencer type of story. I’m looking for any recommendations for other stories that might be similar, short stories especially. I’m experimenting with different tones and voice to find the style that I like most for this story. Going on vacation for 2 weeks and looking forward to reading as much as I can. Thanks in advance!

I will be in Roanoke visiting family for the next 2.5 weeks. I will have wife and two daughters (9 & 11) in tow, but will have plenty of free time to myself as well. What are a few must-do or must-try experiences? I like to keep things simple, but enjoy learning about local history and culture when in new places. Outdoorsy, but also love some good eats, local breweries, etc. Any good antiquing? Pinball? Must-hit hiking trails? I also enjoy strange local lore. Any weird spots to hit? Never been to this area of the country and looking forward to it, thanks!
