Hi all, does anyone do this job or have any knowledge of what the job is like? Reading some of the job postings, but they are very vague and say exactly the same thing regardless of the department it’s in.

Anyone work in O04 or know what it’s like there?

New Obama Book Podcast to Feature AtPH

Saw an ad for this in the Apple Podcasts app. Somebody tell
u/scottyar that Barack is gunning for his job!

I’m excited to share my latest podcast from Audible and Higher Ground, A Great Book with Barack Obama.

A while back, I revisited a few of the books that made an impact on me as a young man, influencing how I think about family, faith, race, politics and America:

- The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin

- Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison

- All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy

- Gilead by Marilynne Robinson

- All the King’s Men by Robert Penn Warren

-Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John le Carré

I invited some friends to explore why these books resonate, how they can shape our understanding of ourselves and each other, and why literature matters now more than ever. I hope you’ll check it out starting September 24 on Audible and discover or rediscover books that stay with you long after you read them.

A Passage from Suttree

I’m rereading Suttree after some 10 years and reveling in the masterpiece. One passage in particular has struck me as indicative of McCarthy’s style and thought I’d share:

> At midnight the fireworks went up. Glass flowers exploding. Slow trail of colors down the sky like stains dispersing in the sea, candescent polyps extinguished in the depths. When it was over he asked her if she was ready to leave. He could feel her breathing under the sweater she wore and he thought she was cold. She turned and put her face against his chest and he held her. She was crying, he didn’t know why. Down there the city seemed frozen in a blue void. Senseless patterns like the tracks of animalcules on a slide. After a while she said yes and took his hand and they started down into Knoxville again.

A lesser writer would go into a whole thing about why she is crying and how they feel about that. But the master leaves this out because when you can write like this it is not necessary.
