Rehire onboarding process
Since I completed my pre-employment medical exam and physical drug testing etc earlier this year, will I need to complete another one for my rehire, or can my previous medical clearance be used

Anyone else seen this?
Interesting in being a planner but I see several. Production planner and scheduler and Facilities Planner. Which has the better salary? Id like to know for 2s and 3s. Thank you
I recently got offered a position as an engineer at NNS from a hiring event. I got my offer on Monday, accepted it, and am now waiting to hear back on additional forms I have to fill out. I'm excited to move forward, but I have some questions that maybe someone here could answer.
So my questions are:
I'm from out of state, so will they be covering the costs to fly me back out for my drug/medical evaluation? I scheduled it at the hiring event, but they didn't go into any travel details.
What is part of the physical abilities test and medical evaluation? Are they going to take blood for tests or is it more basic?
Any general advice on best areas to move to? So far, I've read not to live near the shipyard itself, and I've read good things about Kiln Creek, Hidenwood, and around the Christopher Newport University. Any advice or insight is appreciated though because I do not know the area at all.
I will be starting on 07/20 and I was curious about when is the next pay date for salaried employees. I’m just trying to budget ahead. Thank you!
Random question but how does the law enforcement side work on shipyard property since NNS Security I don’t think has arrest powers?
Im starting as an engineer at NNS next week and I was wondering that’s the dress code. Im a female and I was wondering am I allowed to wear dresses / skirts/ heels???
Thx
Hello, I recently got hired to be a rad control technician trainee at the shipyard. If everything goes well with my physical and drug test i should start classes/training August 9th and I was wondering a few things about the position. To start what type of work do they usually have people do for this position. Is overtime common for this position?. How difficult is it to complete the certification and how difficult is the job itself?
What happens if you get washed out of welding school? Not for attendance or anything but just for not learning how to weld in the time frame they are asking?
I currently work as a tradesman but have been interested in CAD design ever since taking classes at community college. Even without a bachelor's degree or engineering job experience, my associate's degree and shipyard background qualified me to apply for a Designer II position. I was excited to finally get an interview scheduled, but I'm not sure what to expect.
I have a basic understanding of the designer's role and some experience reading VWIs, work drawings, and blueprints (from both a shipyard and general construction background). For those who've been through the process, or those who are familiar with the life of a designer at NNS - I have a few questions:
-What kinds of interview questions should I expect? It will be a one hour interview and it seems that I'll have multiple interviewers (perhaps an interview panel?)
-How much knowledge of design processes is expected for a Designer II applicant?
-Are internal candidates generally favored over external hires?
-Do they typically make an offer after the interview, or is there usually a waiting period?
-If selected, how does the transition from a trades position to design work happen? Is there another background check or drug test, or is it just a department transfer? How long is this transitional process, generally?
-How does Designer II pay compare to trades? I'm currently making about 30 an hour, and while I'd love the opportunity to do this kind of work - taking a significant pay cut would be difficult.
-Do designers typically work inside the shipyard or at an offsite office?
I have countless questions about the Designer II hiring process and daily work life, but I think I'll leave it here. I would appreciate any advice, tips, information, etc. about the role of a Designer II and their responsibilities. I'm probably overthinking some of this stuff - I am excited for the opportunity, but definitely a bit nervous as well.
I’ve heard so much about work life working directly on the yard, but I’m curious how is the salaried/ office environment. I’ve been told about the strict no phone policy, but will we have access to our own personal work phone? Is it a cubicle environment? Thanks in advance for any insight.
I am pissed as hell….I park in zone B on 42nd street and someone stole both of my license plates. Just a PSA for everyone else to check before you leave so you won’t be surprised (like I was).
I don’t know if you guys remember, but about 66 days ago I posted about not hearing anything after my clinic visit, physical, and respirator fit test. At that time, it had been around 18 days with no updates and I was starting to get worried.
Just a quick update—things finally moved forward. Since then, I’ve completed the Marine Trades Trainee (MTT) program, earned my OSHA 10 certification, and I now have my orientation date for X31 Deck Electrician at HII Newport News Shipbuilding.
For anyone still waiting, don’t lose hope. The process can take time, but stay patient and keep improving yourself while you wait.
For anyone already working there, I’d really appreciate any advice for starting out as a new X31 Deck Electrician.
Thanks and good luck to everyone still in the process!
Will I need to have a security clearance to work at the shipyard as a fitter?
May of last year they had security call our crew and they took our phones to search them. I had a few pictures from inside the yard I had completely forgotten about from around 2019-2020. At the time I had worked for an outside contractor.
Not a leased laborer for CTR, integrity, etc. Anyways they indefinitely suspended me. I had worked about 3 years up till that May as a leased laborer doing a ton of UT work for subs.
I didn’t know if after a year they’d consider an appeal on the ban? I’ve been told by many foreman, GF’s, even a couple directors I could probably never come back as a leased laborer, but they’d take me as company because of my reputation as a welder. And what I’ve done in the past for UT work and first time quality.
Any outlooks would be appreciated.
Trying to figure out the best place to hop on a shuttle that’ll lead to the north yard turnstiles?? I’d be parking in a lot on either 42nd or 47th street
Someone PLEASE help me out. I took my drug screening for HII on June 15th. I haven’t heard anything back yet. I emailed my recruiter and no response. Should I be concerned? If there was an issue would they have called me? What would be the next steps? Please HELP!
So trades just got a rather large bump in pay again.
Anyone hear if salary folks are getting anything?
I got a call from The Apprentice School saying that I failed the physical because I failed the grip strength test in my left hand (my right hand was fine). I'm assuming that I did fine in everything else (carrying 20lb bag up ladders, stairs, walking the treadmill, and carrying the mock welder through the little obstacle course, moving the 30lb box to a different spot, picking it up and puting it on a shelf, and holding it over my head for 30 seconds). Has anyone else been disqualified for this, because I think its a very minor thing to disqualify someone over for a welding position.
Hey everyone! I interviewed for the Electrician and Electronics Mechanic position for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard earlier this month and the interview went great. The person that recommended me for the position told me he heard great things. I sent an appreciation email for the chance they gave me to interview as well.
My question is what has the hiring process timeline been in your experience from interview to actually starting the job? I already have an active Secret Security Clearance.
