Student perks question

I’m an incoming freshman and I’ve been wondering what kinds of perks come with being a student at FIT that aren’t necessarily advertised heavily. Are there any subscriptions, memberships, discounts, or services that students get for free or at a significantly reduced price? And which are worth taking advantage of?

For example:
- Free WGSN access?
- Vogue/other fashion publication subscriptions?
- Adobe or other creative software?
- Discounts or free access to off-campus gyms, yoga studios, museums, galleries, etc?
- Student memberships to fashion organizations or industry publications?
- Any NYC-specific student perks that FIT has partnerships for?

Mailroom Question

I’m an incoming freshman and was wondering how receiving packages works on campus. Is the mailroom generally safe/reliable for packages, and is the mailing address different for each dorm? Also, where can I find the correct mailing address for my dorm? I plan to receive most of the items kept in my dorm through the mail.

Housing question

I’m really torn on whether I should try to switch my housing assignment. Right now I’m assigned to an Alumni Hall quad, but I’m wondering if I should switch to a double instead.

The biggest thing making me question it is the price. The quad is about $2.5k more per semester, and I’m already planning on getting the most expensive meal plan to cut grocery costs. so I’d be paying extra for a kitchen I probably won’t use.

The double is appealing because it’s cheaper, has a bigger closet, and is more likely to be on a lower floor. The downside is that it doesn’t have AC, and I’d probably have to leave my current roommates and end up with someone random.

The Alumni quad comes with a private bathroom, but it has a smaller closet, it’s on a higher floor, and costs a lot more.

Right now I’m thinking my best option might be to stay in the quad for the first semester and see if I can switch to a double for the second if I feel it’s not worth the extra cost.

For anyone who’s lived in either, especially Alumni Hall, would you stick with the quad or save the money and go with the double? Do you regret your decision?
