Advice for cat that has been hanging around new home

I recently moved to a new home (SLC), and this cat hangs out on my patio most of the day and night. He doesn’t seem to be afraid of us, and is always sitting near our door looking in. It looks like his ear is clipped, so is he a community cat/stray? Would it be recommended to have him taken in to see if he has a microchip? I’m not sure if the previous home owner was feeding this cat and/or owned him, so I don’t know what the best course of action is.
