For those of you selected, how much did rank matter in your letter of recs?

8 year AD USAF E5 here. I am working with my Recuiter in order to start putting a package together. He recommended the letter of recs from just a flight (platoon) level.

That means my letter of recs would only be from a E7, O2, O3. In addition to two letters from my college.

My leadership asked me if going up the chain and getting a LOR from a O5, O6 would benefit me more but didn’t know if the letters were to be super personal and just touch on my “whole person” concept in my daily work life.

I agree with my leadership and they should go higher. I however like applying to USAF OTS the rank matters a lot on these letters, is that the same for the army?

GERD and caffeine

How does caffeine personally affect you and your GERD? I am in the process of quitting energy drinks and coffee with the hope it’ll ease my symptoms.

For background I’ve roughly been drinking 1-2 sugar free energy drinks a day for seven years.

(Yeah I know it’s terrible, I’m pretty sure that’s how I got gerd)

26M, E5 Military, Colorado, $63K

I joined at 19 because I had no idea what I wanted to do at all in life. Seven years later I still have no idea what I want to do. I joined with the ambition of doing 20 years but that dream has died out recently after looking at my pay stubs and my inability to make the next rank.

I work an admin medical job that is pretty soul sucking and not super transferable (unless I wanna make max 40k).

In hindsight, I should’ve spend more time on career path searching after high school instead of blindly going into military without a second thought. I let them
choose my job and I didn’t even object. My recuiter played me like a fiddle lol.

The silver linings to this is I did end up getting my bachelors and masters degrees while being in the military. I mostly got them because it was just another box to check on a resume. I’m not super passionate about the subjects I got them in (public health & epidemiology). Again, in hindsight, I should’ve done more career research before getting degrees in stuff that I wasn’t interested in and using my entire GI bill. Additionally, I was able to purchase two homes at my previous duty locations.

I tried to go the officer route, it just didn’t work out.

I am still single and don’t have a wife or child at the moment, which is to my benefit in this whole situation. At this point, I’m unsure I will ever break 100k in my lifetime. The economy, Ai, cost of living makes my head spin when thinking about it.

For those of you with 2017-2020 Hybrid models…how long should I expect the battery to last?

I bought the car with 50K miles in 2021, I just hit 110k the other day. I have had zero issues with the car. I am curious to when the hybrid battery will give out and when it’ll need to replaced, and the cost of replacement.

MLT pay

Hello, for the past 10 years I have been active duty military as a MLT. I have my ASCP certification.

I am getting out of military due to a medical issue that was found out recently that makes me ineligible to continue service. I am planning to continue MLT work on the outside. I mostly worked in chemistry/hematology with a little micro mixed in there.

What is the current pay like for MLT working in the civilian world? My only job ever has been a MLT tech since I was 19 in the military so I’m not too familiar with how pay works in the outside world.

I currently live and plan to stay in the southeastern US which is where majority of my family is.

At the present moment I make around 73K a year.

[Medical Lab Tech] [US East Coast] - $63K.

This is the only job I’ve ever worked since I was 19, I’m now 26. I originally joined military and was given/ trained in this job. I have since gotten out and pursued it in the civilian world. I got my bachelors in public health recently with goal of going to grad school for health data science.

But, with the rise of AI I don’t really know anymore what to do.

I have about 80K in 401k

New Windows

What have you paid to get windows replaced here in the springs? I constantly see ads for companies with the “buy two, get two” gimmick and it sounds appealing as I have exactly four windows to be replaced lol.

What are some reputable/ fair companies to go with?

I’m of the opinion that my windows aren’t “giant”, they roughly measure 36” W x 56” H
