URGENT HELP! F1 Visa Interview for PhD
Hey everyone, I’m kinda confused/stressed about my I-20 funding situation for my F-1 visa interview and wanted to know if anyone has faced something similar 😭 I’m joining as a fully funded PhD student, but my I-20 mentions funding for 9 months, while the university website talks about the stipend/expenses yearly. Also, my campus is near the NCR/DC area, so the living costs are apparently higher than the standard funding package. Because of that, my I-20 shows around $7432 as personal funding. Now I’m worried if this will create a bad impression during the visa interview, since technically my program is “fully funded” but the I-20 still shows some personal funds needed. How do I explain this properly to the visa officer? Like, should I say the assistantship/stipend covers 12 months overall, even though the I-20 calculates 9 months?
Also, has anyone had a similar “partially showing personal funds” situation and still gotten their visa approved? Since my intended PhD duration is 5 years, how much bank balance should I realistically show for the interview? Would really appreciate any advice or experiences 🙏
