F1 visa renewal experience

I am a PhD student and I attend my F1 visa renewal interview at the Hyderabad consulate.

Date: April 27th
Location: Hyderabad

VO: Oh, you are a PhD student at Texas A&M?
Me: Yes, I am almost done.
VO: That’s great, congratulations! Are you fully funded?
Me: Yes
VO: *Hands over a white slip* Keep your social media public and email the links to us at the given email ID. Thanks!

Timeline:
Visa interview: April 27th
Email sent immediately.
Ceac status: Refused
May 18th: Admin Processing (for 30 min) -> Approved
May 19th: Issued
May 21: Picked up passport

My opinion:
I believe my application was misplaced or lost or not looked at. I reached out to the embassy at hydcea@state.gov on May 18th and specified that I am a PhD student and I need to go back before my semester starts and kindly asked them for an update. I received a generic response from them in 2 hrs. And my status immediately changed to Admin Processing and then Approved in 30 min.

What helped?
Emailing the embassy politely and respectfully.

Me: Yes officer, I went to Singapore last month for a vacation.

VO: Okay, I am refusing your visa currently under 221(g). It is basically going through administrative processing. Are your social media public?

Me: Yes officer, thank you.

He kept my passport, handed me the white 221(g) slip, and returned my I-20 and SEVIS receipt.

Update:

CEAC status changed from Refused → Approved (same day around 1 PM) → Issued (18th May around 11 AM).

Received passport on 20th May.

F-1 Visa Approved at Mumbai Consulate: Changed University After Biometrics, My Interview Turned Into Administrative Chaos.

I wanted to share my visa interview experience because I had a somewhat unusual experience.

SUMMARY👇

I completed my biometric with the DS-160 having details of ABC university. After biometric I got admit from XYZ university, so i filled a completely NEW DS-160 and submitted it. I carried both OLD and NEW DS-160 confirmation page along with me to the interview. I told the VO i will be giving the interview with NEW DS-160 as my university changed. That is when the administrative chaos started (which you can read in the full post). I was eventually sent to an enclosed room where the OFFICERS ASKED ME to open my OLD DS-160 on the computer screen in front of me and edit out only the university details using a keyboard and mouse on my side. Because that hardware wasn’t working, the officer gave me a white re-entry slip to go make the updates at a nearby cybercafé before the consulate closed. Since I had my laptop with me outside, I logged in and edited the university details on my OLD DS-160. I ran back into the consulate before closing time, and the VISA OFFICER CONFIRMED that my OLD DS-160 had been successfully updated with the new university information.

YES, I WAS ABLE TO EDIT THE OLD DS-160. I COULD MAKE CHANGES TO MY OLD DS-160 ONLY AFTER THE CONSULATE STAFF PROCESSED SOMETHING ON THEIR END AND INSTRUCTED ME TO MAKE THE CHANGES.

FULL STORY BELOW 👇

I had initially completed my biometrics with one university in my DS-160 application details. Later, I received an admit from XYZ university, so I filled out a new DS-160 with the updated university information and submitted it. I carried both new and old DS-160 confirmations with me.

From what I had gathered from the internet, I thought I simply needed to inform the officer at the biometric counter about the new and old DS-160. So when I reached the biometric counter (where fingerprints are taken), I explained my situation to the African American officer seated behind the window. He basically told me to scan my fingerprints and indicated that it wasn't something handled at his counter and that it might be taken care of at the next stage.

At that point, I started panicking because things were already not going the way I had expected, and the next stage was the interview itself.

When I finally reached the main interview window, the visa officer asked for my passport and I-20. While handing over my documents, I also gave him my new DS-160 and mentioned that I wanted to attend the interview using that new DS-160.

After a few moments, the officer asked what changes had been made. I explained that the university details had changed. He tried scanning or processing the new DS-160, but it didn't work. He then asked me to go to another counter and complete biometrics (like the one that actually happens during VAC) again using the new DS-160.

The problem was that the counter he directed me to was closed. I informed one of the staff members, and they asked me to sit on the bench near the exit door and wait. After some time passed, I asked again, and I was then sent to another window where I explained everything once more to the female officer behind the window. I had to wait again for a quite a long time, and eventually I was directed to a different counter.

This next counter was in a separate enclosed room with a computer setup. There were Indian officers behind a glass window, and a mouse and keyboard were also placed on my side so I could make edits. They asked me to open my old DS-160 and edit out only the university details.

Unfortunately, the mouse and keyboard on my side simply would not work. Everyone tried fixing it I tried, they tried, and they even called a technician but nothing worked.

At that point, one of the officers behind the glass instructed me to go to the nearest cybercafé and quickly edit my old DS-160. By then it was around 11:45 AM, and the consulate was closing at 12:30 PM. He handed me a white re-entry slip and told me that if I wasn't able to make it back before 12:30 PM I should return after three days at the time mentioned on the slip.

For context, I don't live in Maharashtra, and I had a flight scheduled later that evening, so hearing that definitely increased my stress levels. Thankfully, I had brought my laptop with me. My parents were waiting outside, so I immediately sat down and started updating the old DS-160 with the new university details.

I finished around 12:10 PM and literally ran back to the consulate. By then there was no one left in line outside. I had to show the white re-entry slip they had given me. Even then, there was a brief delay while the staff confirmed things over the walkie-talkie before allowing me back in.

I had to go through security again and repeat most of the process (except biometrics). Inside the consulate there were barely any people left, and most of the visa officers were already shutting down their counters.

I rushed back to my earlier assigned counter. He asked again for my passport and I-20 and confirmed that my DS-160 had been updated.

Then came the interview questions:

  1. When did you graduate?
  2. Have you ever applied for or been rejected for a U.S. visa before?
  3. What other universities had you applied to?
  4. Why this university? (He interrupted midway and added something like, "among your other admits.")
  5. What are your future plans?
  6. What does your father do?
  7. Who will be funding your education, considering it is an expensive university?
  8. How much funding do you have?
  9. Have you ever been harmed in India?

The officer informed me that my application would go through administrative processing and handed me a 221(g) slip.

The whole experience before the interview was honestly more stressful than the interview itself. I went in expecting a straightforward process and ended up speedrunning administrative chaos 😭. Though I have to say, the visa officer himself was super polite and really cool.

F1 Visa refused ❌ mumbai counslate || 15/05

Advise needed !!
I got refused for an F1 visa on 15 May for MS in Construction Management at the University of Houston and I honestly want some opinions because I’m stuck between reapplying, changing universities, or deferring.

Profile:
Architect by profession
\- IELTS: 7
\- CGPA: 7.06
\- 2 years work experience
\- Program: MS Construction Management
\- University: University of Houston

Interview experience:

The VO only took my passport and did not ask for any documents.

VO: How many universities?

Me: I said I applied to 5 universities and started naming them, but he interrupted me.

VO: Do you have any discrimination in your country?

Me: No.

VO: Do you face any type of harm in your country?

Me: No.

VO: How are you going to finance your education?

Me: My parents are sponsoring me. I have an education loan of around 70k USD and family savings of around 10k USD.

(Interrupted before I completed.)

VO: What do your parents do?

Me: They run multiple businesses and my father is a civil engineer.

VO: What type of business?

Me: Manufacturing of tiles, survey, and consultancy.

Then he immediately said my visa was refused under 214(b).

Vo was in hurry also refusing everone plus same question to everyone and interrups in between

Counter 38

Now I realized there were some mistakes in my DS-160:
\- I accidentally mentioned my father’s birth year as 2000
\- I selected “self” in the person paying for the trip section even though my parents are sponsors

Could these mistakes alone cause a rejection?

Also, my education loan is from MPOWER. Is that considered a red flag for Indian applicants?

I’m also hearing refusal slots are difficult and may take a long time. Should I:

  1. Reapply with the same university?
  2. Change university?
  3. Defer intake?
  4. Improve interview answers and try again?

Please give honest advice, especially from people who were refused once and later approved.

B-2 visa rejected at Delhi consulate, young, unmarried, software engineer

I had my B-2 visa interview at the US Embassy in Delhi last week and was rejected under 214(b) for insufficient ties to my home country. I want to share my experience because I think many people in similar situations might find it helpful.

Here is my profile:
Age: 26
Occupation: Software engineer at a large company for the past 3 years
Salary: Decent for India standards
Marital status: Single
Property: None. I invest most of my savings in equity and mutual funds
Travel history: None internationally
Purpose of trip: Two weeks to meet a friend and do some sightseeing
The interview lasted less than three minutes. The officer asked me four questions:
Why do you want to go to the US? I said to meet a friend and travel to a couple of cities for about two weeks.
How much do you make in a year? I answered honestly.
What is your job and how long have you been working here? I answered.
Do you have any property in India? I said no, most of my investments are in equity and mutual funds.
Then the officer said I am not eligible for the visa right now and to try again when my situation changes. They did not ask to see any of my supporting documents. I brought bank statements, employment letter, and an invitation letter from my friend. Nothing was looked at.
I am frustrated because I do not understand what situation change they are looking for. Even after two years, I will still be a software engineer. I will still not own real estate because I prefer investing in the stock market. I cannot get married just to get a visa.
I talked to two other people who applied for B-2 recently. Both were rejected. One was also a young software engineer. The other was a bit older but still single.
Is there anyone here with a similar profile who actually got approved? What did you do differently? Should I travel to other countries first? Should I wait longer before reapplying?

Any advice would help.

Anyone got F1 visa approved after a recent refusal and reapplying within a month?

Hi everyone,

My F1 visa was recently refused.

I wanted to ask if anyone here got another visa slot within a month after refusal and later got their F1 visa approved?

How long did you wait before reapplying?

Would really appreciate hearing real experiences from students who went through this recently, especially from India.

Thanks.

F1 Visa Slots Update: Current Reality, Today's Drop

Securing an F1 appointment right now has become incredibly tough for the upcoming Fall intake due to highly limited slot availability.

Here is the exact ground reality based on live monitoring over the last 48 hours:

The Big Wave: A massive bulk drop happened early morning day-before-yesterday, but those prime June and July dates vanished almost instantly.

Today's Movement (May 17): According to live tracking today, the system showed some activity, but it was only VAC (Biometric) slots for August 3rd. No Consular interview slots opened alongside them.

What This Means: It looks like the recent bulk wave exhausted a huge chunk of the early summer slots. While earlier dates are now extremely scarce, limited July slots will still pop up in bursts as reschedules happen.

Safety Tips:

If you are still hunting for a June/July date, you have to be smart. The portal’s security is highly sensitive right now:

Limit Daily Logins: Checking too frequently will slap you with a 24-to-72-hour 'Access Limit' block.

Stop Location Hopping: Constantly switching between consulates (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, etc.) triggers instant session restrictions. If you get locked out, you’ll miss the slot even if it opens right in front of you.

Keep trying, stay patient, and keep the site's security rules in mind to avoid getting blocked. Good luck to everyone fighting for the Fall intake!

URGENT HELP! F1 Visa Interview for PhD

Hey everyone, I’m kinda confused/stressed about my I-20 funding situation for my F-1 visa interview and wanted to know if anyone has faced something similar 😭 I’m joining as a fully funded PhD student, but my I-20 mentions funding for 9 months, while the university website talks about the stipend/expenses yearly. Also, my campus is near the NCR/DC area, so the living costs are apparently higher than the standard funding package. Because of that, my I-20 shows around $7432 as personal funding. Now I’m worried if this will create a bad impression during the visa interview, since technically my program is “fully funded” but the I-20 still shows some personal funds needed. How do I explain this properly to the visa officer? Like, should I say the assistantship/stipend covers 12 months overall, even though the I-20 calculates 9 months?

Also, has anyone had a similar “partially showing personal funds” situation and still gotten their visa approved? Since my intended PhD duration is 5 years, how much bank balance should I realistically show for the interview? Would really appreciate any advice or experiences 🙏

New DS-160 after booking U.S. visa appointment — can I still use my existing VAC + interview dates?

Hi everyone,

I currently have my biometric/VAC appointment scheduled for Tuesday and my U.S. visa interview on June 15.

The issue is that I’m unable to retrieve/access the old DS-160 that was originally linked to my appointment. Since it seems unavailable now, I completed and submitted a new DS-160 application.

I wanted to check if anyone here has faced something similar.

Can I still attend my existing VAC and interview appointments using the new DS-160 confirmation number, or do I need to make changes somewhere before the appointment?

Specifically, I’m trying to understand:

  • Will my current appointments still remain valid?
  • Can the DS-160 confirmation number be updated at the VAC/biometric appointment?
  • Do I need to update anything in the scheduling portal beforehand?

Would really appreciate any guidance or recent experiences. Thanks in advance!

F1 VISA SLOT BOOKING HELP | DELHI | INDIA

Hi! I'm an incoming grad student. From past two weeks I've been struggling to book a slot for F1 visa interview. My intended date for tarvelling is in first week of August, which is also around the time that I see VAC slots opening up for now.

Over the past two weeks, I've tried to book slots for myself, and enquired with few agents but have not been able to book even a single appointment. I'm not intending to go via agent route coz of two reasons- 1. they charge a lot (whooping 25-40k) 2. Giving out my credentials to someone just like that especially after hearing so many instances of scams, just doesn't sit right with me.

I've tried to book it myself, however, throughout that time I've been able to book for vac around june end+july first week but haven't come across single consulate opening, resulting in unsucessful attempts.

At this point I've tried almost everything consistent checking, odd times (spent every hour over 3 nights checking it) but I just can't get the slot. And now my situation has become more dire since the vac slots and consulate slots have shifted to August, around the time I intend to travel. So, it's impossible for me to plan it out that way.

I also have other things such as housing, flights to sort out and can not afford to spend more time looking into it.

So I'm open to suggestions as to what may have worked out for you and what did not. Any help is greatly appreciated. If anyone has any thoughts to share on what and how I can secure booking *timely*, please share with me.

ETA from 221(g) to visa issued?

Home county: India, Visa Type: F-2

My wife had her F-2 interview appointment in Kolkata, India on May 14. The officer told her that everything looked okay to him but he's going to put her on administrative processing and handed her a 221g form and handwrote "social media = public". We have made our handles public but haven't seen the CEAC status move. It is stuck on Approved as of May 14.

While that could be totally fine, I wanted to ask what the timelines have been to get the visa issued from 221g? My understanding is that the status will go from Approved to Rejected / Refused to Issued on the CEAC portal.

Looking for more details on status changes and timelines on a 221g. Many thanks!
