52 days ago I was embarrassed to show my whole face

June 13th(last pic) was the day I posted a before pic of my skin. I was so ashamed of my acne that I couldn’t post a full pic because the other side was worse. I had been on tretinoin for a month and my skin was purging. My skin barrier had also been compromised due to using 0.05 every night (sandwich method) in the beginning stages as directed by my dermatologist.

Coming on Reddit really reassured me that this is a process and patience is key. I also stopped using tret every night and opted for once a week until my barrier healed completely.

Now I’m smiling and excited to say that I’m using tret again every night(no sandwich method) no breakouts and my skin is so soft and smooth!! It’s been such a long time since I’ve felt comfortable and confident in my own skin 🥹

I still have a ways to go but I’m okay with that because I know it’s only going to get better. I’ll be turning 40 in January and my biggest gift will be living life with clear skin!

The first 6 pics were taken today. 🙂

1 month on tret, is my skin purging??

I’m 39 and have dealt with acne since my early teens. My kids and I have always had sensitive skin. I’ve had a couple years of clear skin but the last time was 2022. I developed cystic acne over 2 years ago and 6 months ago my dermatologist recommended antibiotics and ammonium lactate 12% which had no effect.

Recently Doing my 2nd visit he decided to put me on Sulfameth/Tmp 800 antibiotics and
Tret 0.05

He advised me to use tret every night which I started doing. Immediately the peeling happened. Outbreaks in areas I usually don’t have like around my ears and side of my eyebrows. Using it every night caused my skin to become super sensitive and sore to touch. So after reading about this on Reddit and seeing how the same happened to others I decided to limit my use of tret to once a week until my skin barrier is able to tolerate it better.

I’m posting this pic as a before. My skin does have a glow to it, it’s softer, and since limiting my usage the breakouts are healing and aren’t so severe. The dark spots are also clearing up.

My skin routine is
AM:
Cereve Foaming facial cleanser
Cereve Hydrating Toner
Cereve Oil control Moisturizing Gel-Cream

PM:
Cereve Foaming Cleanser
Cereve Hydrating Toner
Sandwich Method with tret and Cereve moisturizer

Does my skin barrier look like it’s getting better?
