Great compost system...for breeding invasive Asian jumping worms. Oops. Also: compost potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes!

I was so proud of my contiguous compost windrow system as a great way to keep worms alive over winter. I was right, it *was* a great system, but since Asian jumping worms can breed without a partner and spread endlessly, and since I collect carbon from many different sources, I guess it was inevitable I'd have this problem.

In this video I discuss how I'm dealing with it and end with a positive note on some "compost crops" I'm cultivating as well as some of my tree crops as a bonus. I'd love some advice on how to adjust my system to control these invasive pests.

For those who hate all of the pee jokes here: /r/Compost is back open

Join me over on /r/Compost, re-opened after /u/530TooHot's grouchy comment gave me the idea. I've put maybe 20 minutes into re-opening it, so I'm sure it'll be rough around the edges at first, but I will strictly enforce freedom from constant pee jokes over there.

Please help me inform the pee-joke-haters that it's available when you see them around here. I have no idea if there will be enough activity over there to keep it running, but it's worth a try.

This does not mean that we're opening the floodgates to pissposts over here. You are still supposed to keep your posts here focused on composting and, y'know, not disgusting. Nobody here wants to see you actually urinating into your compost or to see your piss jug.

But it makes sense to separate things. The pee jokes here have become a bit much for some people.

/r/Compost is back open to allow a space to discuss composting without the constant pee jokes of /r/composting

Enjoy!

I don't have the enthusiasm, energy, or time to promote this place much, so please help with that if you like. But I'm perfectly happy to re-open this place to allow people to discuss composting without the constant jokes of /r/composting. It absolutely has gotten a bit much over there.

Let's keep it clean over here!

The #1 Rule | Beginner Guide | Can I Compost it? | Important Links | The Rules | Off-Topic Chat/Meta Discussion

Beginner Guide | Tumbler FAQ | Can I Compost it? | The Wiki

The #1 Rule:

We don't discuss urine here. While urine is a useful compost ingredient, this place is for people who have tired of its constant discussion on /r/composting. This place is otherwise identical--note how I simply copied and pasted most of this post--to /r/composting.

Getting started:

Crash Course/Newbie Guide

Are you new to composting? Have a look through this guide to all things composting from /u/TheMadFlyentist.

Backyard Composting Basics from the Rodale Institute (PDF document) is a great crash course/newbie guide, too! (Thanks to /u/Potluckhotshot for suggesting it.)

Tumbler FAQ

Do you use a tumbler for composting? Check out this guide with some answers to frequently-asked questions. Thanks to /u/smackaroonial90 for putting it together.

A comprehensive guide of what you can and cannot compost

Are you considering composting something but don't know if you can or can't? The answer is probably yes, but check out this guide from /u/FlyingQuail for a detailed list.

The Wiki

So far, it is a sort of table-of-contents for the subreddit. I've also left the previous wiki (last edited 6 years ago) in place, as it has some good intro-to-composting info. It'd be nice to merge the beginner guides with the many different links, but one thing at a time. If you have other ideas for it, please share them!

Discord Server

If you'd like to chat with other folks from /r/composting, this is the place to do it.

Welcome to /r/Compost !

Whether you're a beginner, the owner of a commercial composting operation, or anywhere in between, we're glad you're here.

The rules here are simple: Be respectful to others (this includes no hostility, racism, sexism, bigotry, etc.), submissions and comments must be composting focused, and make sure to follow Reddit's rules for self promotion and spam. Also, if you're going to discuss adding urine to your compost, please post on /r/composting instead.

The rules for this page are a little different. Use it for off-topic/casual chat or for meta discussion like suggestions for the wiki or beginner's guides. If you have any concerns about the way this subreddit is run, suggestions about how to improve it, or even criticisms, please bring them up here or via private messages (be respectful, please!).

Happy composting!

Milk crate + compost for a fertilized lawn (and extra soil contact/moisture retention for adding new seeds)

After I seeded one area of the lawn that I completely killed due to my laziness last summer (I laid stuff on it and left it there until this spring--oops!), I decided I should just go for it and fix the rest of the lawn properly, adding Dutch white clover, maiden pinks, and heal-all as well as some extra grass seed.

My method is super straightforward, so feel free to skip the video if you want: I add compost to a milk crate and shake it out as I move over the lawn, sifting out the biggest stuff as I go. The method isn't perfect, as *some* big stuff still gets through, but it's good enough for me.

I ended up using just over four wheelbarrow-loads of compost to cover the lawn with a fairly thin layer. I'll go through in a bit and also add straw on top to help keep it shaded and help it retain moisture.
