What’s That One Book?

The one you’ve been eyeing for a while but haven’t pulled the trigger (either read or bought). Especially interested if it’s a deep cut. I’ve loved every NYRB I’ve read but it feels like the same 10-15 books get recommended everywhere.

Starting Point for Murakami

As the title says, I’m looking for a starting point for Murakami. What would you recommend for my first one?

Recent reads I’ve really enjoyed (if that helps/matters)

Slaughterhouse Five

Stoner

Giovanni’s Room

Where to go next?

Here’s my full collection. I’ve only read the top three. What’s next? Open to any suggestions/reasoning without spoilers obviously!

Question about Life and Fate

I’ve heard great things about Life and Fate and want to start it soon. I’ve never read a book over 450 pages or so, so it’s a little intimidating in that regard.

But my question is: should I read other Russian lit before I start this? I know Stalingrad is technically the first book in the series, but I’ve seen plenty of people say they read Life and Fate first. So that’s not my question. But so I need to read Notes from Underground or C&P or something before this for context? Should I do some catching up on the Soviet Union’s involvement in WW2? Should I just go for it? Open to any recommendations and advice. Thanks!

Help. I have a problem.

Can’t stop buying NYRB Classics. It’s like other books don’t exist. Off the back of the summer sale where I ordered four books I just ordered In a Lonely Place, The Stone Face, and Slow Days Fast Company from my local book store.

“Quick” History of the Balkans

Looking for the best (or your favorite) books on the history of Balkans. Something narrative driven or big picture is preferred.

I liked Destiny Disrupted which I felt was a pretty good “quick history” of the Muslim world.

Say Nothing was narrative focused but did a good job (imo) of illustrating the history of the conflict.

This post is about the Balkans but if you have a similar suggestion about a different region, country, or culture I’d love to hear it.
