Seals at Point Pleasant Park

I saw these seals recently on the Hen and Chickens shoal off Point Pleasant Park at low tide. The one on the right needs a daybed and a smoking jacket.

So how was Day 1?

Did you get lost looking for a class? Make a new friend? Get stuck in traffic? Run into someone you didn't expect to see today? Any other surprises?

PSA: Find your classrooms before classes start!

Welcome to Halifax/Dal!

On my first day at Dal, many years ago, I got on the wrong bus and went from Woodlawn to MSVU before finally going to Dal, and then had trouble finding the right classroom.

Learn from my mistakes, and find all of the rooms this weekend, before classes start!

Also, check out the tunnels from the Killam Library to the LSC. If you have classes in the Killam, chemistry building, MacDonald building, Chase, or LSC, you'll appreciate those routes when it's raining or cold!

"We captured a single day in Nova Scotia in 1993"

"What was it like in Nova Scotia in the 1990s? We'll show you. On March 12, 1993, CBC captured the sights and sounds of a single day in Nova Scotia. Our cameras went all over the province to record the day. We also asked audience members to send in their own photos and videos. What you’re about to see are some of the moments picked from hundreds recorded on a single day. It’s a celebration of our unique province. Recognize anybody in this video?"

The SkyHawks dropped in to Shearwater today

The SkyHawks (Canadian Armed Forces Parachute Team) parachuted into Shearwater as part of the Highway for Heroes Nova Scotia Tribute Ride this morning. I was about 4.5 km away, on the other side of the harbour, but I was happy with some of the photos I took. I'd like to see other photos from people who were closer, too!

Here are some photos I took in Halifax in the past couple of weeks, featuring a Double-Crested Cormorant, a Northern Flicker, an Eastern Painted Turtle, a Downy Woodpecker, a Song Sparrow (with some insects for lunch), and a Cedar Waxwing!

Elm tree seeds all over Halifax

I saw so many of these seeds flying everywhere in Halifax today, and gathering on sidewalks and cars. If you, like me, were wondering what kind of tree they were from, it's an American Elm. The seed is also called a samara (plural "samarae"), like the little green maple 'helicopters' (which were also plentiful today).

Transom windows with address numbers

It used to be common for houses in Halifax to have a transom window above the front door, and many houses had their civic address number painted on the glass. Some houses still have these, and some of them still have the old number, from before the change to a (mostly) 4-digit grid system in the 1950s-1960s (See https://www.halifax.ca/about-halifax/municipal-archives/source-guides/civic-address-history for more info about that. )

I've see houses with them on Robie, South Park, Coburg, Carleton, Preston, and Pepperell.

If you know of some I might have missed, I'd like to hear about them! (Feel free to DM)

Sullivan's Pond gosling update

I saw the goslings at Sullivan's Pond today, and was surprised by how big they are now -- larger than the nearby mallards already! It's great to see that all seven survived!

This weekend I took some photos at the Public Gardens -- a juvenile cormorant, common grackles, and a mallard duckling. I saw a mother duck with two ducklings, and another one with three.

Two turtles and a squirrel

These were some of the non-avian animals at the Halifax Public Gardens this weekend! A red-eared slider enjoying the sun, an eastern painted turtle (which I first saw there a year and four days ago), and a red squirrel looking for a snack.

Vincent Coleman ferry returns to service on May 19

"Posted: May 15, 2026 - 3:42 pm

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that the Vincent Coleman ferry will return to service at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19. The Alderney ferry will then operate on its usual schedule of every 15 minutes on weekdays, from 7 a.m. to 8:15 p.m.

The Vincent Coleman has been out of service since January due to a steering system issue that required specialized replacement parts and it returns to service following successful testing and sea trials.

The Craig Blake ferry continues to undergo scheduled inspections, as well as a significant repair, and will not be available for service until later this year.

Updates on the Craig Blake will be provided in future public service announcements, on the Halifax Transit service disruptions webpage and on Halifax Transit and municipal social media platforms.

The municipality thanks residents for their patience during this service impact."

PSA - parking bans and street closures this weekend for the Bluenose Marathon

Just a heads up -- the Bluenose Marathon races are happening this upcoming weekend, and there will be parking bans and street closures on Saturday and Sunday in parts of the Halifax peninsula and Dartmouth. Details here:

https://bluenosemarathon.com/events/parking-bans-street-closures/

The Macdonald bridge will be closed to vehicles on Sunday from 7:30am to noon, so you may need to give yourself extra time to take the MacKay. Buses will also detour to the MacKay and will likely take longer than normal. The ferry may be a better alternative!

To all the runners, you've got this, and have fun! And kudos to all of the organisers, volunteers, and cheering spectators!
