Stunt Casts vs. Star Casts vs. A/B/C List Broadway-Names

There’s been a bit of talk on this sub recently about theatre “names” and what drives the success of a production. I’d love to hear other’s thoughts on this and have some discussion because I just find it so interesting! Especially as we look towards the future of Broadway and how the industry can sustain itself. Are Star/Stunt casts the only want to keep Broadway viable, or can shows itself be enough of a draw to keep audiences engaged?

You have shows like Hadestown who have come out of what seemed like a downward slump back in late 2023ish thanks to the repeated Star casting homeruns with people like Lola Tung and Jordan Fisher. They’ve seemed to find a great casting niche of finding actors who are famous enough to carry a show — but aren’t necessarily the “above the title” kind of name that overshadows the production itself.

Then there’s shows like Six, Operation Mincemeat, Hamilton, The Outsiders, etc, who have been able to sustain long runs without the need for “outside broadway” hires. Essentially every person in the OBC and following companies have been within the A/B/C list of Broadway names tiers and the show itself is the appeal, not particularly the actors themself.

Stunt casts I feel like have been frowned upon in the past few years, especially when the stunt-casted-actor is so obviously ill-prepared for the role. I think there’s a fine line between star vs. stunt that we’re going to see maybe less of pure shock-value stunt casts in favor of more thoughtfully curated star casts.

Stunt casts are what I would describe as a big-name celebrity, primarily known for their work outside of theatre, who appeal broadly to a wide-range of people and are generally known enough by the public. More often than not, they’re casted in things out of their range and are not always true Broadway quality. But most of the time, people are there to see that famous person and that’s the sole reason for seeing the show. Stunt cast contracts are typically very short.

Star casts are a bit different in the sense that it’s a well-ish known name from their work in either film/tv/music, but the difference is they can carry a tune and sustain more heavy-hitting roles. They usually have a novice theatre or live performance background and actually can be considered Broadway quality.

Then there’s the A/B/C lists of Broadway names. These are the actors who are really only known within the Broadway bubble, and do mainly just theatre and stage work on Broadway/off-broadway/regionally. Obviously there’s tiers to this — there are some NYC actors who have originated many roles or were in more cult-classic shows, while some have just been career replacements in long-runners.

Some recent/contemporary examples of each tier:

“Stunt” Casts

  • Megan the Stallion in Moulin Rouge
  • Literally pick anyone who has done Roxie or Billy Flynn in Chicago
  • Cameron Dallas in Mean Girls

"Star" Casts

  • Lea Michele in Chess
  • Lola Tung/Maia Reffico/Jack Wolfe in Hadestown
  • Madeline Brewer/Thomas Doherty in Little Shop of Horrors
  • Josh Groban in Sweeney Todd
  • Isa Briones in Hadestown and Just In Time
  • Jordan Fisher in basically everything recently LOL
  • Sarah Hyland in The Great Gatsby

A/B/C List Broadway “Names”

  • Eva Noblezada, Derek Klena, Nicholas Christopher, Jeremy Jordan, Joy Woods, Hannah Cruz, Solea Pffeifer, McKenzie Kurtz, etc y’all get the vibes haha

Anywho long tangent aside lol — I guess my thoughts are while I love a good star cast done right, I think it’s a bit sad we’re seeing some downfall from the days of when Broadway comprised of self-made, stage-primary actors. Like, earlier today there was an interesting comment about how Eva Noblezada is probably the closest thing to modern-era Broadway leading lady, but even the mainstream public doesn't know about her. Shows that don’t need to resort to star casting are far and few nowadays — and even Six, a show that I felt like could continue to give a platform to new, up and coming actors, has started “star” casting so it just goes to show how things are constantly changing!

Current Tour Leads Jessie Davidson and Zoe Jensen sing "For Good" on Dallas News

Our current 2025-26 Wicked National Tour leads Jessie Davidson and Zoe Jensen did an official performance of "For Good" earlier this week on a local Dallas news station! So glad we got a semi-official recording of these two singing a Wicked duet and bittersweet it's "For Good" as their run in the show ends within the next month 🥲

If you're in Dallas, run to see Zoe, Jessie (and Jada, Nicolas & Eileen) before the cast turnover on June 7th! Hope to see them on Broadway reprising these roles one day soon <3

I switched my OTF shoes and suddenly my base on treads is much faster than before

I used to be a Hoka Clifton girly 4 life when it came to good cross trainers for OTF. They’ve served me well, my first pair lasted my first 9 months at OTF and I’ve been on my current pair since this past November. I go to OTF M/T/TH/F. I also run outside of OTF (medium runs on Wednesdays and long runs on Sundays) — and for that I’m mainly an Asics fan!

I found a GREAT deal for New Balance FuelCell Super Comp v3s earlier this year and wanted to use them in my outdoor running rotation after hearing how great of outdoor shoes these are. And needless to say…I hated them lol. They didn’t feel as good as my Asics on the pavement, so for the longest time they just lived in the back of my closet and I wasn't sure of a purpose for them.

Until this past week. I work from home, so usually by the time my afternoon OTF class rolls around I’m ready to go for class and darting out the door immediately after ending the day. But last Monday, I was running hella late and hastily got ready — and instead of slipping on my Hokas, I somehow grab the FuelCells. I kid you not I didn’t even notice until I was sitting in the lobby of the studio 5 minutes before the start of class, lol. Immediately I was like ohhh this is going to suck LOL

However…y’all. I genuinely don’t know what happened but I feel like switching up my shoes just leveled me up, lol. While the Fuelcells are a *bit* high for floor, they were amazing on the treads. I was kicking at about a 5.5-5.8 base the past few months, with my push being 6.5-6.8 and all out being 8-9. These were speeds that I felt really made sense to me and what I felt physically able to sustain. But that day’s tread block, I hop onto the tread and try to get it going with my usual base. It definitely took a minute or two of getting used to running on the tread with a new pair of shoes on that I’m not used to for OTF, but almost immediately I locked in once I got into a rhythm. My usual base of 5.5 just felt a bit slow frankly, so I picked up the speed to a 6 and was shocked at how easily I was able to sustain that and not feel any fatigue in my legs or feet. Even today with the strength block and running at 5-7%, usually my feet and legs kill me on these blocks but I feel like it isn’t as bad lately.

I feel like we’ve had a handful of endurance based blocks these past few days, so I was able to really experiment with new speeds and I honestly think these new paces are here to stay. I wonder how much of this is a mental thing but also maybe shows how important it is to find gear that works for you lol! I've been keeping my new speeds for a week now, so I think I can say this isn't a fluke 🤣

Anyway long story short lmao — anyone experience something similar? Changing up a piece of your routine and finding that helps push you to that next level?

Or, anyone have some similar shoe stories? Lol! Here to advocate that Fuel Cells are pretty solid OTF shoes!

Hi all! Anyone have any insight on some news about the incoming 2026 to 2027 US National Tour cast? The announcement feels relatively late this year (for reference, the current principals were announced in April of 2025). The cast is confirmed to turnover on Sunday, June 7th in Dallas.

Jada Temple, the current Nessarose, just posted this on her IG story…is Ethan Kirschbaum being extended as Fiyero? That would be interesting as for the past few years now, the Wicked tour has gone the route of replacing all five principals at the same time and not extending any singular character.

I saw the current cast shortly after their debut in Utah last year and they were fantastic!!!! Truly my favorite cast I’ve seen (and I’ve seen Wicked soooo many times since the early 2000s lol) and would love for them all to get a Broadway run eventually too. I am excited to hear who steps into these roles next!

I have loved witnessing the absolute celebration that May has become in the Broadway space in recent years with the absolute rise of AANHPI theatremakers in NYC, on tour, regionally & abroad! There was a post earlier this week celebrating AANHPI on Broadway specifically, so just thought it was only right to give those on tour their own post as well.
