What is the sweet spot for a trailer?

Looks like THE END OF OAK STREET is going to underperform this weekend and some comments from Reddit and in real life that I've encountered spoke to an unfavorable reaction to the trailers. This is interesting to me because so much of the great stuff about the movie was saved for the film and, to hear people tell it, that's what everyone wants.

So I'm wondering, can there every be a formula for movie marketing that counteracts all of the things going against an original movie (lack of awareness, cost, a culture that have grown to consider the synopsis of a given movie to be a spoiler). Can there ever be a standard of a trailer that doesn't "give away the whole movie" (a claim I'm almost always dubious of) but still has stops to pull out to entice the kind of person who enters every movie with their arms crossed (increasingly more and more of the general audience) into going to the theatre?

This is a little like staring into the abyss.

You remember that part of MATILDA where the kid has to eat the gross cake? 😅

Disney/Marvel Studios does not have the capacity to make a cinematic X-Men saga that's actually about anything.

The team has been either written or promoted as fictional stand-ins for lots of different marginalized groups. It's gone on for so long that large pockets of the die-hard fans have come to adopt those readings as the primary mode by which the property is understood (full disclosure, so have I).

Also for the X-Men to work, there has to be tangible prejudice against mutants. And if this is going to be the bedrock of the next however man movies, some characters that people like are going to have to become anti-mutant. Unless they think they can sell the audience on, everybody's a superhero racist except for all the heroes you like.

What's the creative ceiling for an MCU X-Men movie with such a massive gulf between what we understand the X-Men to be culturally vs what's in the comics vs what a 4Q blockbuster can do (when produced and financed by The Walt Disney Corporation)?

Zendaya should work with Yorgos next

I saw SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY and thought it was pretty fun but, interestingly, the only thing sticking with me about it is the bit where The Character™ is possessing MJ.

Zendaya's best mode, in my opinion, is when she gets to play in that almost sadistic, prickly meanness. It was the funniest part of CHALLENGERS, the only part of MALCOLM & MARIE that works and it felt really refreshing in BND because the Spider-Tom trilogy never really let her do anything.

Yorgos Lanthimos really knows how to bring out and harness that kind of acid and I think they should work together. Any other suggestions for directors who are good at playing in that space?

Where to go dancing?

Does anyone have any suggestions for good dancing spots? I've recently realized that, with all my friends settling down, I basically don't have any weekend friends anymore. In my soul-searching about getting myself back out there, I've realized that I want to go dancing?

Where can I get my groove on, are slash kansas city???

From the director and star of the Blade movie Marvel couldn't make work.

Direct all that energy and support this way, y'all.

Also, can anyone remember another American action film with a Muslim lead? Or is this the first?

In Defense of Actually Dynamic Discussions of Superhero Movies...

So... I don't know, dawg. I think The BRAND NEW DAY was a great episode of The Big Picture.

I think a lot of the bristling against Amanda's posture toward superhero movies is a little overblown. Her response is reflective of a lot of the TBP audience's reactions to these movies and provides people whose relationship to them isn't so sycophantic with a way into the conversation.

Additionally, she, Sean and Van are very dynamic in these discussions. A superfan, a less invested fan and someone who doesn't care is the best combo of voices to tackle such massive phenomenon.

I also want to give props to Van, whose takes on everything are as fascinating as they are funny as they are infuriating as they are compelling. He is very self-aware about his biases as a fan and rides for the community of people who love this stuff. He also made an excellent point about how the culture, after ENDGAME, rightfully demanded that all of this needed to start actuall6 being about something if it was going to choke the industry/medium like it was and that Marvel ultimately couldn't meet that challenge.

I just love that "This movie is not perfect but is as perfect as comic book movie as they come" can share the same discussion space as "the only thing that works here if you're not fully bought in to the MCU writ large is the lead trio bouncing off each other." It's the kind of talk I come to the show for.

It's Supergirl week!

Too many of the posts I'm seeing (all over movie and superhero subreddits) is just a bunch of handwriting about Supergirl's box office and I just wanted to say that the movie is finally here!

If you or other people don't like it, it's literally just a movie. If you LOVE it – you won, babe. The movie got made and it exists forever. So enjoy the week, enjoy the movie and don't let a people who watch movies like losers spoil your fun.

Happy Supergirl Week!
