Need advice on US/Canada university shortlist for MS Bioinformatics – Fall 2027

Hi everyone! I’m a biotechnology undergraduate from India planning to apply for Fall 2027 and would really appreciate some advice on my profile and university shortlist.
Profile:
B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology, 4-year degree
Currently in 7th semester
CGPA: 7.85/10
Previous biotech/bioinformatics-related research/internship exposure
Currently learning Python + bioinformatics tools
Planning to build a small computational biology project and put it on GitHub
Planning a 6-month Bioinformatics/Computational Biology dissertation from Jan–June 2027
No publication currently but im working on one
IELTS planned; GRE not taken yet
Current US shortlist:
University at Buffalo
Case Western Reserve University
Saint Louis University
I’m also considering Canada, Germany mainly looking for good ROI, scholarships/TA/RA opportunities and strong job prospects.
I’d love advice on:
How realistic are my chances at these universities?
Should I choose Bioinformatics/Computational Biology vs Biotechnology?
What other universities would be good targets for my profile?
How much would a GitHub computational project + upcoming dissertation strengthen my application?
Would really appreciate advice from international students who have gone through the same process!

Need advice on university shortlist for MS Bioinformatics/Computational Biology for Fall 2027

Hi everyone! I’m an undergraduate biotechnology student from India planning to apply for Fall 2027 master’s programs, and I’d really appreciate some honest advice on my university shortlist, chances, and what I should focus on before applying.
I’m currently deciding between an MS in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology and an MS in Biotechnology in the US. I’m also considering Canada, Germany, the UK, and potentially other European countries.
My academic profile
Degree: 4-year B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology / Biotechnology with Research
Currently: 7th semester
CGPA: 7.85/10
My coursework includes molecular biology, genetics, genomics, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, biotechnology, etc.
I have some exposure to bioinformatics and computational biology, although I don’t have a formal CS background.
I’m currently developing my programming skills, particularly Python, with plans to learn more R and statistics for biological data analysis.
Research / practical experience
I have previous research/internship exposure in biotechnology and bioinformatics-related areas, including experience with computational tools and biological data analysis.
However, I currently don’t have a major publication or a large independent computational research project.
I’m working on improving this before applications by:
Building a genuine computational biology project using a public biological/genomic dataset
Learning Python and relevant bioinformatics tools
Potentially doing an online research/internship opportunity if I find a worthwhile one
Working on a possible review paper, although I don’t want to assume that it will be published before applications
Dissertation
I am also expected/planning to complete my final-year dissertation from approximately January–June 2027, and I am aiming to do it specifically in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology.
Since applications will be submitted around October 2026, the dissertation will be ongoing at the time of application rather than completed.
Would it still be useful to mention this as “upcoming/ongoing research” in my applications?
Tests
I haven’t taken the GRE yet.
I’m planning to take IELTS around August 2026.
I’d prefer universities where the GRE is optional/not required unless submitting it would meaningfully strengthen my application.
Current US shortlist
So far, I’m considering:
University at Buffalo (SUNY)
Case Western Reserve University
Saint Louis University
I’m still building my list and expect to apply to around 15–20 programs across different countries, rather than applying only to highly competitive universities.
Countries I’m considering
🇺🇸** USA
🇨🇦
Canada
🇩🇪
Germany
🇬🇧
U**K
I’m also open to other countries if there are strong Bioinformatics/Computational Biology programs with good career prospects and reasonable funding.
What matters to me
My main considerations are:
Overall cost and ROI
Scholarships for international master’s students
TA/RA opportunities
Tuition waivers or assistantships
Strength of the Bioinformatics/Computational Biology program
Job opportunities after graduation
Long-term career prospects
Post-study work opportunities
I’m from a middle-income background, so taking on a very large loan for a master’s would be difficult. Funding and affordability are therefore major factors in my decision.
What I’d really like advice on
1. Based on my profile, how realistic are my chances at University at Buffalo, Case Western, and Saint Louis University?
Would you consider these safe/target/reach universities for me?
2. Should I focus specifically on Bioinformatics/Computational Biology rather than Biotechnology?
I increasingly prefer computational work and would eventually like to work in areas such as genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, biomedical data analysis, etc.
Would an MS in Biotechnology still make sense for this career path, or would a dedicated Bioinformatics/Computational Biology degree be significantly better?
3. What universities would you recommend adding to my list?
I’m particularly interested in universities that are:
Realistic with my academic profile
Strong in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology
Relatively affordable
Known to have TA/RA opportunities or master’s funding
Good for employment after graduation
4. How much would one genuine computational project help my application?
I’m currently learning Python and planning to build a small but legitimate project using public biological/genomic data and document it properly on GitHub.
Would this make a meaningful difference compared with simply having online certificates?
5. Should I take the GRE?
If a university lists it as optional, does submitting a good GRE score meaningfully help an applicant from a biotechnology background, particularly when competing for scholarships?
6. How important is research experience/publication?
Would not having a publication significantly hurt me, or would 7.85 CGPA + relevant coursework + previous research exposure + a computational project + an upcoming bioinformatics dissertation be a reasonable profile for many master’s programs?
7. What would you prioritize if you were in my position?
I have several months before applications and about a year before starting my master’s. What 3–5 things would you prioritize between now and applications to make my profile substantially stronger?
I’d especially appreciate advice from people who have applied to or are currently pursuing Bioinformatics/Computational Biology master’s programs as international students.
Thanks in advance! Any honest feedback on my profile, shortlist, or strategy would be really appreciated.
