Neighborhood Watch Dog

When he was younger, he would bark at homeless people in our neighborhood. I have no idea how he knew they were homeless, but he did. Lots of training later he hasn’t done that in a long while.

Last night we were on our walk. Passed two homeless people sleeping outside. No response. Homeless guy limping down the sidewalk going somewhere. At first I thought this might be scary for him. Nope, no response. I thought, he’s doing so good!

Headed back home and as we passed through the square I noticed a guy behind a pillar up to something and I immediately got a bad vibe and felt some fear. I started to hurry past and put distance between us.

He noticed the man and barked. It wasn’t a reactive bark or a fear bark. No growling. No pulling. It was like a deep voice saying “Hey you! Up to know good? Go away!” Then he came back to heel totally calm. I looked back and the guy had picked up his stuff and was hurrying away.

He knew somehow. He wasn’t afraid or aggressive. He just indicated assertively the guy wasn’t welcome in the neighborhood. And the guy left.

On the one hand, I don’t want him barking at anyone. On the other hand, I went from feeling concerned for our safety to feeling very protected and safe. This morning we passed right by four homeless people sleeping on benches. No response.

It’s like I’m raising a security guard.
