What in the world is the DIY team doing with this cart? Wrong answers only.

No two days are the same when you volunteer with the museum. We have big plans for the little farmhouse and the grounds surrounding the birthplace of Richard Jefferies, and we are putting them into action. If you'd like to spend some time with unrepentantly excessive tea drinkers, and learn or hone your skills, get in touch with us!

Former cowshed, now community garden (in progress) at the Richard Jefferies Museum

The community garden - the first phase in the complete rejuvenation of the grounds surrounding the Richard Jefferies Museum - is coming along really beautifully. One thing we've uncovered is this amazing cobbled path.

Jefferies was born here, and it was a farm at the time. Where the community garden sits was once the cowshed! It's really fascinating for everyone to get hands-on with the history of the place.

We won't be excavating the entire thing, but we are definitely restoring some of it, as you can see here. It's a sight to behold, and our volunteers are doing wonderful work.

Richard Jefferies Museum's Lazy Summer Sundays presents Shedric, 2pm start

Free live music on Sunday afternoon Doors open 1pm, music starts around 2pm

Shedric is a distinctive voice on the local music scene - an artist who doesn’t fit neatly into any one genre. Blending elements of folk, blues, and acoustic music, his intricate guitar work and strong songwriting give him a sound that’s entirely his own.

Known for his detailed fingerstyle playing and thoughtful, often unpredictable songs, Shedric has built a reputation as someone you won’t come across twice. His music shifts naturally between quieter, reflective moments and more driving, rhythmic sections, keeping audiences hooked from start to finish.

His latest album, The Misadventures of Theodore Thump, is a great example of what he does best—well-crafted songs, characterful playing, and a style that stands out without trying too hard. Copies will be available at his shows for anyone who wants to take it home.

We're also launching the Five Friends and Fibre exhibition, a collective of friends who make beautiful things. We had a sneak peek today, and you have to see it to believe it - our gallery is stuffed with the most amazing items (and wool, all the wool). They will also be doing live demonstrations of wool spinning. It's going to be amazing!

Five Friends and Fibre exhibition and demonstrations on Sundays in July

Five Friends and Fibre

The Richard Jefferies Museum has a new exhibition going up this weekend, and there will be live spinning demonstrations every Sunday afternoon (during Steam and Cream Teas, too). Such dexterity and skill involved, and they are a very welcoming, friendly bunch, too!

In their own words:

> Our interests include spinning, weaving, dyeing, historical textiles, embroidery, lacemaking, braiding, knitting, dressmaking and crochet. > > We get great pleasure from passing on our skills to people, especially children, as we believe that the younger generation will be the people to enable the crafts that we enjoy to continue to be used for future generations.

The museum gallery is open to visitors on: 10am - 1pm Mondays (by arrangement), Tuesdays (during Nature Tots), Wednesdays (by arrangement), Thursdays (during Nature Tots) 10am-4pm Wednesday 8th July 1pm-5pm Sundays (during Lazy Summer Sundays)
