Need help with cats

Hi, I’m not sure if this is allowed on here but i was just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction to talk to someone about the cats i’m worried about on my street? I think a few of them are coming from houses on my street but i’m not sure about others as they all look like strays. A lot of them are very skinny and obviously not neutered. A few of them spend a lot of time in my garden crying and fighting all night and i’m just really worried about them 😔

house surveyor in Swindon area?

looking up the internet it appeared £500 for a 2 bed just over £200.000 would be more than enough for a level 2 survey. I've approached two local surveyors and was quoted £700 and £750+vat! online surveyors start their prices at £450-550 vat included but they're all either from somewhere up the country or operate from virtual offices - some claiming they're in Swindon are registered places like Pembrokeshire. I've found one giving their RICS number which didn't even come up on the RICS website! how do people in Swindon get their surveys done? why are they so expensive? We're talking tiny 2 bed from the early 90s here! I do want the house to be checked over by a professional but £700 seems like too much, £500 seems decent but the companies offering them give a shady vibe.

Why did my cousin come to Swindon?

I've recently discovered a distant cousin, Reginald Willis (born 1926). He, like me, is an Anglo Indian. He was apparently an electrical engineer. He had another female cousin who married a guy in Chippenham. And this all happened in the 1940s and 1950s.

Now, their parents worked on the railways in India, and I'm guessing that the railway industry in Swindon, and Westinghouse in Chippenham, could be a common factor.

We're trying to find out what happened to him - nothing yet found after 1960. So is there any kind of resource, such as a society, or museum that might have railway records for that time?

Where to get decent furniture

Hi everyone, first post here.

My wife and I are moving to Swindon from abroad very soon. We're hoping to decide on our main furniture within our first few days of arriving, as it’ll be much harder to shop around together once I actually start my new job.

Since we are thinking about renting a car for a few days, are there any good furniture places or showrooms worth checking out in or near Swindon?

We're mostly looking for "mid-tier" furniture for now. We are leaning towards IKEA (Maybe Bristol or Reading, or ordering from Tesco Extra), but we also are completely open to local suggestions across different price ranges if you think the quality and value are worth it. Also, we are mainly thinking of buying new furniture, but if you suggest good second-hand places, we are open to checking those out as well.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! ^^

Why?

This is definitely my stupidest post here yet but i just gotta know. This isn’t the first or even second time i’ve seen a broken watermelon on the ground. I’ve seen it multiple times and never in the same location. One time it was a pumpkin somewhere and it wasn’t even autumn. Are people just dropping watermelons?

My question is why have i seen this sight multiple times over the last few years

What was that almighty bang this morning? 16/05

As the title says, I was walking by the library at Regent Circus today at around 10.30 or so when I heard a huge bang that sounded like it came from the east side of the town?

Sounded like an explosion or something - certainly far too loud to be something simple like a car backfiring.

Did anyone else hear it or have any information on what caused it?

Best meal you have ever had in Swindon. Where was it and what did you order?

Looking for genuine recommendations from people who actually eat here. Not TripAdvisor. Just real people and real food. What is the one place you keep going back to?

Best McDonalds in town

Keep seeing trends on here about hidden gems and best places to eat in town. Got me thinking. Went to McDonalds last night near the Mini dealership. Thought it wasn't particularly good. Mayo chicken seemed to be devoid of mayo. Sons Fanta zero with his happy meal was low, McFlurry not mixed particularly well. My daughters "end of SATs"
Reward wasn't quite as hoped. So anyway, please rank the various McDonald outlets across Swindon best to worse, and describe your experience

Swindon named one of England’s best places to raise a family

I have to say I’d agree! I moved to Swindon in 2022 - mostly because my grandfather lived here - and everyone seemed so surprised that I would willingly move here from New Zealand. But I have to say over the past 4 years I’ve really come to love this town. There’s great transport connections by road and rail to London, Bristol, the rest of the South West/West Midlands and beyond; beautiful outdoor spaces right on our doorstep, not just with Lydiard Park and Coate Water, but the Cotswolds Lakes and the Ridgeway; excellent sports teams in Swindon Town and the Swindon Wildcats; and a lot of history and culture we can be proud of in our railway heritage.

What made Swindon the most favourite diasporic space for Goans to settle in?

Figures show that Swindon has the highest absolute number of Goan immigrants and second + third gens residing, followed closely by Wembley and Harrow in West London. It is the largest home, especially in inner areas like Broadgreen, County Ground, Eastcott and New Town.

I wonder how Swindon is the most attractive destination for that community.

What is the Swindon hidden gem that locals know about but that most people passing through would never find and why does it not get more attention?

What has actually improved about Swindon in the last five years that people here would point to if they were being honest rather than just reflexively negative?

Not looking for tourism board answers. Looking for the things that people who live here have genuinely noticed getting better. Infrastructure, venues, food scene, community stuff, whatever. The easy version of this conversation is just to list problems and there are plenty. But there must be things that are genuinely moving in the right direction .

Looking for friends

Hi everyone! My name is Johnathan and I’m 37 from Newcastle. I’ve been living in Swindon since 2022 and I have still not made any friends yet. I love different types of cultures from all walks of life and would be nice just to have someone to hang out with

I’m a Swindon local and I built a site to help us swap stuff for free. Would love some feedback!

Hi everyone,

I live over in Coate and I’ve been working on a project called Swapze (swapze.com).

I got fed up with the fees on eBay and the general sketchiness of FB Marketplace lately, so I wanted to build something just for swapping and trading items directly.

It’s still very much in the "early days" and I'm looking for my first 10-20 users to help me test if it actually works for people here. If you have 5 minutes to take a look or even list one random thing you were going to bin/donate anyway, I’d really appreciate it.

No pressure at all, just trying to build something useful for the town! If you have ideas on how to make it better, please let me know.

I've also got a bunch of flyers that I would like to distribute, so if anyone knows any good places/noticeboards I can put some on, that would be awesome!

Cheers!

[EDIT]

I am more than happy to negotiate something in return for the first few people to list some items up 😄 Just give me a shout and can work something out

Swindon reinventing itself as a centre of drone manufacturing.

So, is someone being very stupid by announcing this, making Swindon one of the first places Putin will bomb if the worst comes to pass, or is it an elaborate piece disinformation with the real factories in Basingstoke, with Swindon being bombed anyway as after all, it's only Swindon?

Climate change film in Swindon draws supportive crowd

This film, The People's Emergency Briefing, is fronted by Chris Packham and spearheads a major push to tell the British public the truth about the risks to the UK from the climate and nature crisis and about the solutions that exist - if we act fast enough.

Screenings focus on local action and the local MP is always invited and asked to ask the Government to do a prime-time, televised national emergency briefing on the crisis, mount a proper emergency response, and show international leadership.

Great to see someone hosted a screening in Swindon - I hope more groups will do so and help get this important information out.
