Moving to Cary — tons of questions about local elementary schools and daycares
Here's what we're trying to figure out:
- Horton: How often do kids actually get capped out? Do people realistically get off the waitlist, or should we assume we won't get in?
- Alston: A lot of people seem to get sent here when Horton is full — is it actually a good school, or a fallback you'd rather avoid?
- Carpenter: Mixed signals online — is it generally considered good or bad by people with kids there?
- Davis: Is it really as competitive/intense as people say?
- Mills: I've read it's a great "balanced" option — high performance without the prestige-driven pressure. Does that reputation hold up?
- Highcroft: Specifically hearing it's very teacher-dependent and hit-or-miss more than other schools nearby. Is that accurate?
Bigger picture question for anyone who's been through multiple kids in public schools here: how much weight would you actually put on the elementary school when deciding where to live? I go back and forth on how much it should matter at that age.
Also looking for:
- Daycare recs — which ones in the area do people like?
- School Buses — are they safe, clean, reliable, and on time?
- Parent involvement — what does week-to-week participation look like at these schools? Is it expected? Easy to plug in?
Appreciate any insight — trying to make a decision and the school piece feels like the hardest variable to pin down from the outside. Thanks, y'all!
