Why is commander so lonely?
I’m playing through Vision of Eternity after taking a break from GW2, and one thing really stood out to me… how lonely the story feels…
What I think I miss the most is having a group of characters that would feel like my crew. Games such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 or Baldur’s Gate 3 reminded me how much relationships can elevate a story. They give emotional weight to everything that’s happening in the main plot.
Back in old days in GW2 we had Dragon’s Watch. I’m not saying that those characters were perfectly written, but traveling with a consistent cast gave the journey this emotional core. Now it often feels like I’m just going from point A to point B, getting reports, following orders, hacking stuff and reading tons of bureaucracy to understand what’s going on in newest expansions (which feels like a chore, duhh).
Canach and Sayida feel like they’re in Castora on business rather than sharing the Commander’s journey. It made me actually wonder: who is actually close to the Commander anymore? Who feels like family after so much Commander went through? Why should I even care about new characters Anet introduces in new expansions, if relationship with them ain’t gonna last?
Without those consistent relationships that could evolve with the new stories, I find it much harder to get invested in the plot. The world is still interesting, but the emotional connection just isn’t there for me.
Does anyone else feel the same??
