UREOPLASMA PARVUM
[F21] Hello doctors, I’m looking for help anywhere I can and I hope someone here might be able to help me. This post is probably more suited for urologists/gynecologists/infectious disease specialists, but anyone who can help is welcome.
I’m a 21-year-old woman, and my story started 2 months ago, when my gynecologist diagnosed me with a yeast infection (candida) after I developed intense vaginal itching and white, odorless discharge. She prescribed treatment (oral fluconazole and vaginal washes), and the problem seemed to improve, until a few weeks later it started coming back, accompanied by the symptom that has now become my personal nightmare: a constant urge to urinate.
Following my gynecologist’s advice, I had a vaginal swab done and tested positive for Klebsiella pneumoniae, Gardnerella, and Ureaplasma parvum. I also had a urine culture because of the urinary symptoms, but it came back negative.
My gynecologist prescribed:
Cefixoral 500 mg + Chemicetina 500 mg vaginal suppositories
Since my symptoms didn’t improve, she later added:
Ciproxin 500 mg
Nothing worked. The itching/burning/discharge improved somewhat, but the urinary urgency did NOT. I started doing a lot of research (including here on Reddit) and discovered that the cause might actually be the Ureaplasma parvum, and that none of the antibiotics I was prescribed are usually effective against this bacterium. From what I’ve seen, patients are often treated with doxycycline 100 mg twice a day for 10–14 days, followed by azithromycin 1 g 12 hours after finishing doxycycline and then 500 mg daily when additionally prescribed.
I’m not a doctor, but I asked other gynecologists for advice, and none of them seemed to take this bacterium seriously (I’ve read that there’s still little consensus on how it should be managed). They told me to stop taking antibiotics and instead focus on restoring my vaginal flora with probiotic suppositories and oral probiotics (which I’ve been taking for over 10 days now), and to continue taking D-mannose supplements for the urinary urgency.
None of this is helping. In fact, I feel like the itching is slowly starting to come back as well. I’m desperate. I feel the urge to urinate all day, every day, and it has been going on for two months now. I just want my old life back. No one seems able to help me. I feel extremely discouraged.
I know it may sound trivial to some people, but having this constant urge to urinate 24/7 is genuinely debilitating in the long run.
