I didn’t expect to enjoy Happy Place as much as I did. ❤️

Rich.
Complicated.
And somehow, incredibly relatable.

During the earlier parts, I thought this was going to be just so-so. I figured I’d still enjoy it because I love the way Emily Henry writes her characters (they’re really lovable for me), but I wasn’t sure I’d love the plot. I thought it was going to be pretty mid.

I’m also not a fan of the miscommunication trope. I hate it. Hate it to my core. Haha!

But this one is done differently.

I loved the complexity of the characters. I didn’t necessarily agree with all of their choices, but I understood why they made them. They felt so fleshed out and real, and I loved that their decisions weren’t always simple or easy to understand.

And I enjoyed not just the characters, but the story itself. I loved how it might really just happen in real life. But, of course, what I loved most is the guaranteed happy ending. Another perfect escape!

This may be tied up with my rating for Funny Story: a solid 4/5.

I’m on an EmHen hype, enjoying RomCom and fluff before going back to Stephen King, whose books have become my natural habitat. 🤣

Looking for another 5-star read!

Wow, I finished 5 books this month! No 5-star reads this time, but I really enjoyed Beach Read by Emily Henry and You Like It Darker by Stephen King, especially "Rattlesnakes."

I'd love some recommendations for books with a similar vibe!

For reference, here are some of my all-time 5-star reads:

Stephen King: 11/22/63, Doctor Sleep, The Institute, The Shining, Misery, Billy Summers

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

Some People Need Killing by Patricia Evangelista

Thanks so much! 😊

Rattlesnakes by Stephen King

I’m currently reading SK’s You Like It Darker, a collection of his short stories and novellas, and this one’s my favorite so far! (Sorry, Danny Coughlin, you’ve officially been bumped down to #2..)

It took me a while to finish this one because I kept needing breaks. It’s that horrifying. This novella scared the absolute hell out of me.

Only Stephen King could write about a freakin’ haunted stroller and somehow make it one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever read.

As much as I love The Shining and Doctor Sleep (these 2 are my top SK novels to date), this one honestly scared me even more. I wasn’t expecting a novella to get under my skin like this, but it absolutely did.

I understand that this one is a sequel to Cujo, which I haven’t read yet, and now I think I absolutely need to read that book next.

I swear, Stephen King just never misses for me. I freakin’ adore his writing!

Recommend my next read, please!

So I have been binge-reading Stephen King books since I was introduced to his writing this April, and I enjoy them so much. But I think I need something light in between, something that will make me laugh so hard or something that will warm my heart and make me feel safe. Something like a palate cleanser, sort to say. Please help your girl out. Thanks!

P.S. So far, I’ve enjoyed Piranesi and Funny Story as examples of light reads. ❤️ Rom-coms with good prose are very much welcome! 💕

Books that are fun and easy to read

So I have been reading quite a lot of dark-themed books (mostly Stephen King) and I enjoy them so much. But I need something light now, something that will make me laugh so hard or something that will warm my heart and make me feel safe. Something like a palate cleanser, sort to say. Opinions on Holly by SK

It’s a solid 3.5 for me.

There were definitely some great parts, but this is probably my least favorite Stephen King book so far. I went in with high expectations because I loved Holly Gibney in If It Bleeds, which was my first introduction to her character.

In this book, though, I just didn’t find her all that interesting. The same goes for most of the other characters. I never really felt invested in or connected to them. Maybe it’s because I haven’t read the Bill Hodges trilogy yet?

Maybe that’s why.

It kind of felt like I was expected to already know and care about these people. It almost didn’t feel like a standalone novel.

For the first time ever, I did not like the storytelling style SK went on to use in this one.

But the story itself is really good and very interesting. The ending was satisfying, and despite my issues with the book, I'm still glad I read it.

On to the next Stephen King book! Care to recommend your favorite novel by the King?

This book got recommended to me a lot. It seems interesting and it got me curious so I bought one from Empire Bookstore.

To those who’ve read this, what’re your thoughts? No spoiler, please! 🙏

Finally Read Doctor Sleep. Wow!

Yo, what a sick book! Easily one of my favorites from King.

As a sequel to The Shining, it successfully expands upon the original story while establishing its own distinct identity. It’s different, but it’s also kickass in its own way.

I loved wondering what special connection Dan and Abra has. The fact that they had been linked since Abra was only two months old created an intriguing sense of anticipation for me while I’m reading the novel. I’m not sure I’m satisfied with the reveal though, but for the story’s sake, fine, it makes sense.

The True Knot is also very interesting. Will they appear in other SK books? Will SK write a dedicated story about them in the future? I’m open to encountering them again in his works.

But Rose scared me crazy. She’s evil and she’s cray-cray. It’s the worst combo.

I loved how the characters were fleshed out in this book.

I also loved the ending.

Oh gosh, I love the book so much!

Special thanks to my husband who gifted it to me for my birthday. It made my reading extra special. ❤️

Looking for recos based on these recent reads

I enjoyed the books I’ve read this May, especially the Stephen King ones! Anything you can recommend based on these? Thanks in advance!

Yes, I am fairly new to King. And yes, I still read books written by other authors, sometimes as palate cleaners because, let’s be honest, SK’s work can be really really dark. I love them though.

P.S. I just started Doctor Sleep and wow, I think this is another banger from Stephen King!

Books I’ve Finished This May

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and 3 Stephen King books. 🎉 (I devoured all of it!)

I never thought I would love SK’s writing style so much. His storytelling just works for me from beginning to end. Planning to read a lot more of his work! Some people are suggesting to read his novels in publication order. What’re your thoughts on that? 🤔

Slow burn, but wow, what a ride that was.

I loved this book. What terrified me the most, more than anything supernatural, was the horror of reading Jack Torrance’s descent into madness. It was really heartbreaking.

I’ve heard mixed opinions about how Stephen King writes his endings. To me though, after reading three of his books, his endings feel right. They fit the story. They land where they should, at least in my experience.

The Shining is a solid 5-star read. It has a very different vibe from Billy Summers (which still holds the top spot in my heart), but I loved The Shining all the same. Different tones, same brilliance.

My Stephen King ratings so far:
Billy Summers- 5/5
The Shining - 5/5
Misery - 5/5

All five stars!

I think Billy Summers just has that extra magic for me because it was my introduction to Stephen King.

Now I’m curious, what are your 5-star Stephen King reads?
