by Pierrot, I'm referring more specifically to director Shuhei Morita.

First of all, I have no doubt it was a rushed production, which is why the ending had pngneki for quite a while; I think it was even an extra minute or so after Unravel finished, and that’s probably why the Kaneki vs Arima fight didn't happen. The production committee is undoubtedly to blame for that and the general animation issues the season suffered from.

Now, according to Morita's own AMA, his ideas were suppressed by "those above him", referring to the production committee, but lately I've been changing my mind. I'll focus on the most important point, but first, let me clarify: Ishida did want the story changed (assuming Morita didn't twist things in his AMA to make himself look good). Morita stated:

"Ishida had specifically wanted us to create something original for the second season, which is why it moves in a different direction."

With that clear, and moving on to the main point, what Morita specifically says is:

"In order to complete Tokyo Ghoul √A's aim of Kaneki joining Aogiri, we needed to make some changes. Ishida-sensei also urged me to change stuff and go a different route, which is where a lot of the anime came from. We had a massive bubble of ideas, but as to not affect the lore of the original manga, it constantly felt like those ideas were being chipped away at by those above me. I tried my best, and I honestly don't have any regrets given the movement space I was allowed."

To clarify the setup: the draft was over 300 pages long, let's assume 350, because we know nothing about the unpublished material; what is known is that the published content begins on page 1, skips nothing, and ends on page 190… And the second siege of Cochlea hadn't yet occurred and because It's the most likely number of pages, given that they should've known it was going to be 12 episodes long and the extermination of the Owl (which largely follows the canon) begins in Episode 8, and the industry average is 45–50 pages. "But that means it covers seven episodes," you might say, and yes… because the draft begins at Episode 2, clearly establishing the time skip and the fact that the Aogiri arc concluded 6 months earlier (Images 1 and 2).

Okay, here Morita talks about "we", him and Ishida. Obviously, he's referring to the time they were planning and working on the draft, right? That’s the most likely scenario. Even if he weren't, it wouldn't make sense for the final Root A changes to have been accepted by the production committee, why? BECAUSE THE DRAFT INCLUDED THE KANO ARC. (Images 3 and 4) I really doubt that a production committee aiming to stick to the canon would have Morita change the draft to focus on Cochlea and literally cut one of the most important arcs in the entire manga.

To be completely honest, I’m almost sure the ending was entirely Morita’s idea, since it’s the only episode he directed personally rather than just supervising and because of the discarded script for the scene where Kaneki and Hide reference the play, I’m fairly certain he made changes to the drafts and the story later on, trying to shoehorn in his discarded ideas, like... the silent Kaneki. Especially because of this:

"Ishida-sensei also urged me to change stuff and go a different route, which is where a lot of the anime came from."

Just a bit of extra info, no source, so feel free to be skeptical: I could swear I remember an interview where Ishida was asked about the anime's ending and said something like, "I saw what THEY were trying to do, and I saw how complicated the production was; I don't blame them." Which would imply that he wasn't involved in the ending and, once again, there was no draft prepared with Ishida for the finale because it had to follow the manga. If anyone knows which interview this is, or if this is real, please send me a link and I'll add it.

I don't know, I've seen Kaneki's suffering compared to that of other characters several times, for some reason people seem to like "suffering scaling" so I thought it was interesting to mention here

Definitely add more foreshadowing and slightly change some designs Whether it's for greater contrast between OG and Re or just for taste (for example, Itori in Cochlea's flashback, whose hair in OG now seems to be more similar to her short appearance in the timeskip at the end of Re); perhaps that includes better establishing the shapeshifting nature of the kagune.

Also, I think he would give more construction time to practically every important turning point and add symbolism, or at least that's what I get from him giving the director guidelines for the final episode of the first season (as Morita reveals in his AMA, yeah, Ishida basically gave Morita a guide of how he wanted episode 12 to be).

Rize's hinting at her past with the Washu in the redraw honestly took me by surprise.

Also, I found it curious that Yomo burned down Anteiku like in Root A instead of it being demolished like in the original. Interesting retcon, but I guess for the sake of impact that scene is canon now.

I know there are several versions of the story, but after all the research I did (including the average number of pages adapted per anime episode), Ishida's draft should have reached episode 5 or 7 with its slightly over 300 pages (especially since the second siege of Cochlea should have been much shorter, as the published pages up to 190 are Kano's arc and the prelude to the siege).

Even though the production committee ruined it, shouldn't the extermination of the Owl have followed the manga? I suppose Amon without his Arata and this ending were something Ishida and Morita brainstormed, but it doesn't make sense that they (or maybe just Morita) kept this version for the final episode, especially considering that the production committee forced them to stick to the main points of the canon story, the later part of the story was adapted (partially) and the manga ended at the same time as season 1 (including things like how in tight anime productions, episodes are finished days, if not hours, before they air).

Note: In case anyone isn't familiar with the topic, Shuhei Morita directed the first two seasons of the anime, and Ishida (the mangaka) created a draft of around 300 pages for the story changes.

Well, I'm learning Japanese so I don't fully understand them yet, but I always imagine something like:

Director: "But the audience will be disappointed that the escape from the aogiri base is ski..."

Ishida: *slap* "IT'S BEEN SIX MONTHS! If they want to know how Kaneki escaped from the base, they should read the damn manga! We don't have time for that!"

1. Both of them never convinced me that Uta didn't deserve to die. Regarding Yomo, I think he should have died in Cochlea against Arima, although the execution should have been different from his near-death experience.

2. Would've been peak. I also think that, given the context of the three Blades, it would have been interesting to see Miza become the leader of the White Suits and have a chapter or two in the 13th Ward, having previously established in the story the reinforcements for the end of the fight against V.

3. He deserved it, maybe not here, maybe with a redemption or catharsis before dying, but he definitely deserved it. With Aura, I think more could have been done without necessarily killing him.

4. She should have either died here or have done more throughout the story. Honestly, her character is one of my least favorites, not only in Re but in all of Tokyo Ghoul after the dove arc.

No. even the anime makes it clear when he rejects Rize (despite that weird victim-complex "I'm not wrong, the world is wrong" thing).

I'm sick of everyone constantly repeating that meme-like phrase when he himself acknowledges the similarities between himself and HIS TORTURER and how jason was a victim too despite everything, and everyone in his inner circle sees that he's still the same nice guy and his "monster" side is more like a mask that hurts him, not a part of him.

The first part of the story is Eto, moving on to the clearest point, we know there were two attacks begore OG TG: Eto attacking the 2nd ward with what we can call "the initial Aogiri," Kuroiwa is injured in that attack but manages to cut off one of Eto's arms. Then, in the same year, Kuzen appears attacking the 2nd ward and Arima cuts off his arm... Was this meeting between Eto and Arima related to the first siege of Cochlea or is it not connected to any major attack by the Owl that the CCG has recorded?

Well, for the anime they chose random colors instead of consulting Ishida or checking the illustrations. It wouldn't be the first time; the same thing happened with Tsukiyama and Koma's hair.

It's not that I hated him before, but it was more like, "meh, he's there, exists, doesn't add or detract much from the story."

I know Twitter already has automatic translation; the post is simply in my native language, so I couldn't translate it without changing the settings, and this was faster.

​I recently had to format my PC and lost an old Auto Action I used in my workflow: 'Anime Filter Autoaction' by KiyuuNeko (Content ID: 2067182).

Since the creator seems to have removed it from the store, I can't download it again from my history.

​I’m reaching out to see if anyone who happens to still have this tool installed could help me out. I don't necessarily need the file itself—if you could share a screenshot of the steps/commands inside the Auto Action panel through the Reddit chat, that would be enough for me to manually recreate it.
