Guess the 4 songs! 🎵 Plus: How to give commands in Greek using music (Imperative & Pronouns Breakdown)

https://reddit.com/link/1tigepi/video/7r48vo4kg92h1/player

🎵 CAN YOU GUESS THE 4 SONGS? 👀👇
There are 4 Greek tracks in this video. Do you know the names of the singers or the titles? Drop your guesses below, or ask me for the full tracklist!

📚 GREEK LESSON: Commands & Pronouns 🇬🇷
Here is the full breakdown of the grammar behind today's video!

1️⃣ POSITIVE COMMANDS (Προστακτική Αορίστου / Aorist Imperative)

In English, commands stay the same, but in Greek the verb changes depending on who we speak to:

• (Εσύ) Φέρε! → 2nd person singular (talking to one person)
• (Εσείς) Φέρτε! → 2nd person plural OR formal / polite singular

2️⃣ WEAK PRONOUNS (Clitics) & WORD ORDER

Instead of repeating nouns, Greek often uses weak pronouns.

Example:
• «Φέρνω το μαστίγιο στον Γιώργο.» (φέρνω κάτι σε κάποιον)
→ «Φέρ’ του το!» & «Φέρ’ το του!»

💡 In POSITIVE commands, weak pronouns normally go AFTER the verb.

Examples:
• Φέρ’ μου το! (το παλτό / the coat)
• Φέρ’ της το! (το σκαμπό / the footstool)
• Φέρ’ τους το! (το παιδί / the child)

Plural/Formal:
• Φέρτε μου το! (το πακέτο / the package)
• Φέρτε της το! (το δώρο / the gift)
• Φέρτε τους το! (το τραπέζι / the table)

🗣️ You may also hear:
• «Φέρ’ το μου!»
• «Φέρ’ το της!»
• «Φέρ’ το τους!»

💡 WHY DO WE USE THE AORIST IMPERATIVE?
In Greek, we use the Aorist Imperative (Προστακτική Αορίστου) for actions that are specific, one-time commands meant to happen right now, at this exact moment!

STAY TUNED: In a future lesson, we will talk about "double accents" («έγκλιση τόνου») and why some words get an extra tone!

🎵 MUSIC RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY:

Χάρις Αλεξίου — «Τέλι τέλι τέλι» (1979)

"Freedom requires virtue and courage." Remembering the Pontic Genocide through history, poetry, and language. 📜

https://reddit.com/link/1thga0e/video/i1ril0ley12h1/player

May 19th is the Pontic Greek Genocide Remembrance Day. We honor the 353,000 innocent lives lost and keep their stories, culture, and memory alive. 🕊️🖤

«Θέλει αρετήν και τόλμην η ελευθερία».
This powerful phrase was written by the great Greek poet Andreas Kalvos in his ode "To Samos" (1824). It reminds us that freedom is never free—it requires virtue, courage, and sacrifice. 🇬🇷⚡

Advanced Greek in Real Life 🚨

In the video, you hear about a survivor. In formal Greek, we use a special participle that changes by gender:

🔹 ο επιζήσας (masculine) — (αυτός που επέζησε / the survivor)
🔹 η επιζήσασα (feminine) — (αυτή που επέζησε / the survivor) 👈 Like in our clip!
🔹 το επιζήσαν (neuter) — (αυτό που επέζησε / the survivor)

These are called "λόγιες λέξεις" (formal words), used in history, news, and official documents.
Here is how you will see them used in Greek:

✨ το παρόν έγγραφο = this present document
✨ επί του παρόντος = for the time being / currently
✨ οι επιτυχόντες στις Πανελλήνιες = those who passed the Panhellenic exams 🎓
✨ η μαθήτρια ήταν απούσα / παρούσα = the student was absent / present 🏫

https://reddit.com/link/1tgh3bp/video/gkynvqpa4v1h1/player

Do you have imaginary friends? 📞✨
Εσείς έχετε φανταστικούς φίλους; (Plato just called! 🏛️)

“— Plato called me last night.
— The philosopher?
— Who else?
—And what did he tell you?
— Drop it, you don't want to know. You'll get mixed up in this.”

The Simple Past in Greek (Αόριστος) 🇬🇷
It answers the question: "What happened?" (One-time action).

Key words to spot it (Timeline markers):
🔹 Χθες / Προχθές (Yesterday / The day before yesterday)
🔹 Πριν από τρία χρόνια (Three years ago)
🔹 Πέρσι (Last year)
🔹 Τον περασμένο μήνα / Την προηγούμενη χρονιά (Last month / year)

💡 Tip: Think of it as a "snapshot" 📸 of a specific moment!

The many faces of "Άσε" 🗣️
The verb "αφήνω" (to leave / let) in its imperative form can mean many things:

1️⃣ Άσε μας, ρε! (Come on, give us a break! / Stop lying)
Used when someone is telling you nonsense or cheating you.

2️⃣ Άσε με, έχω κουραστεί. (Leave me alone, I'm tired)
Used when you don't want to be bothered or talk about something.

3️⃣ Ψέματα δεν θέλω, άσε! (I don't want lies, forget it!)
Used to dismiss a conversation or a situation.

Learn Greek via cinema, art & media 🎬 | Real Language

🇬🇷

Are you tired of standard textbooks and looking to dive deeper into the soul of the Greek language?

I am a native Greek instructor and I’m offering personalized 1-on-1 lessons designed specifically for culture lovers, and cinephiles.

How it works: Instead of dry grammar drills, we use Greek movies, music lyrics, contemporary media, and history as our textbook. Together, we will:

  • Analyze scenes from classic and modern Greek cinema.
  • Break down the slang and everyday language used in real life.
  • Explore Greek history and mythology through text and video.
  • Keep track of everything (vocabulary, corrections) in a dedicated, shared Google Doc so you can track your progress.

My goal is to teach you how Greeks actually speak, while discovering the beautiful culture behind the language.

I am currently accepting a few new students for premium, high-value packages. If you want to move away from tourist-level Greek and experience the language through art, send me a DM or check out my TikTok where I post cultural breakdowns:
