100W amp for strictly home practice – too much?

Hey everyone,

Just to be clear upfront: this is purely for home practice – no gigs, no rehearsals, and I don't record through it either. I go direct into my interface for that.

I play bass mainly, guitar occasionally. Live in an apartment, practice in my home office. Daytime = amp, nighttime = headphones.

I already have a ToneX Plug for silent practice, plus a few bass preamps and a UAFX Dream 65 for recording. So my amp is really just a daytime monitor.

Currently using a PJB Engine 17 (70W Class D) – never turn it past 2 o'clock, more than loud enough. Just getting bored with its ultra-clean sound and fancy a second amp for more tonal options.

What I'd really like is an FX loop, so I can run my preamp/amp-in-a-box pedals into the return and treat the amp as a powered cab. But most combos with FX loops seem to be 100W with a 12" speaker – like the Fender Rumble 100 or Ampeg RB-112.

So a few questions:

  • Can a 100W 12" combo actually work at neighbour-friendly volumes?
  • Does the RB-112's -15dB input make a real difference for indoor use?
  • Or, for the same money, would I be better off getting two smaller 8" 25–30W combos (like a Rumble 25 and an RB-108) – more variety, less boom?

Curious to hear your thoughts. Thanks!
