Hair loss may be permanent. Make sure you know what kind you have!
This is becoming more well known now but while I was on tirzepitide I experienced hair loss from androgenic alopecia. This is female pattern hair loss and it does not just grow back, and it’s not from rapid weight loss or nutritional deficiencies.
I want people to know so they don’t wait it out as has been suggested by many. If you’re experiencing hair loss while taking this med, go to a derm and get a scope done. Don’t let them just eyeball it. If they can see no miniaturization or scarring at the follicle, they can tell you it’s TE with confidence and then it likely will grow back. which is great news for you! It’s easy to tell when it’s AGA because they will see miniaturized hairs.
but if you’re like me and GLP1 kicked off an underlying predisposition to AGA, then the loss is permanent and progressive without specific treatments. i also made the choice to stop the med. I was on it for 10 months, never went above 2.5mg and lost 13 lbs in that time. No nutritional deficiencies detected in bloodwork I did every 3 months.
I went to a derm early on when I started losing and she said glp1’s dont cause AGA. I went back 8 months in and she said the research now suggests that it can in some people. They didn’t know before. Now they know it can cause AGA but they still don’t totally understand why.
I just want others to know this and get the right treatment so they can make choices while they still have them!
