Considering a move to Tantallon/Fort Washington area - would love honest opinions from locals
We’re considering buying a home in the Tantallon/Fort Washington area and would love to hear from people who actually live there or know the area well.
A little about us: We’re a married couple with one child. We currently live in Alexandria and have essentially outgrown our house. We’re looking for more house for our money. We come from large families and host a lot, so we need space. We also have a pitbull mix, so having outdoor space would be a huge plus.
My husband plays golf at Tantallon and really enjoys the neighborhood, which is what initially got us looking in the area.
Our child will be attending private school in Old Town, so we’ll still be in Alexandria regularly. We have a pretty busy schedule in the Alexandria area and plan to continue doing a lot of our shopping, restaurants, activities, and socializing there.
One of us works remotely, but I typically work from coffee shops in Old Town rather than staying home all day. My husband would be commuting for work. He actually doesn’t mind commuting because he listens to podcasts and considers it his downtime, so the commute itself isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker for us.
We also really value diversity and would love to live somewhere with a good mix of different races, backgrounds, and family types. We want more space and affordability, but we also really want to know our neighbors, make friends, and become regulars somewhere locally when we have the time. A neighborhood restaurant, bar, coffee shop, etc.
For those who live in Tantallon, Fort Washington, or nearby:
- How do you actually like living there day to day?
- Do you feel like there’s a real sense of community?
- Are there local restaurants/bars/coffee shops where people become regulars and socialize?
- Are there water activities?
- How difficult is it to get back and forth to Alexandria?
- How realistic is it to maintain an active social life in Alexandria while living there?
- Anything about the area that you wish you had known before buying?
- And most importantly… would you make the move again?
We’re trying to balance affordability and space with still having a community feel and being reasonably close to the places that are important to us.
We’d especially appreciate honest opinions - the good, the bad, and the “here’s what you’re going to regret after living there for two years.”
Thanks in advance!
