Tell me about an interesting program you wrote or maintained

Hi all,

Younger dev here I’ve been reading the SICP book and also blog posts about Common Lisp and Emacs Lisp and I’m fascinated by the culture during its heyday (e.g. Symbolics era). But I didn't find more anecdotes besides the one here about how in the 1990s a piece of Germany’s air traffic control software ran on Emacs.

I’d love to hear about the programs you used to deal with and overall what tasks you think Lisp excelled in.

Thank you!

Taking children to reiki appointment

Hi everyone! 😊

I'd love to ask for some advice from parents in our community.

As more families have been visiting us for energy healing sessions, I've been thinking about how to make our waiting area as comfortable, welcoming, and low-stress as possible for children (including those who may be neurodivergent or have sensory sensitivities).

If you've ever taken your child to a wellness appointment, doctor's office, or similar space, what little things made the experience easier? And what do you wish more places would do?

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. I really appreciate it. ❤️

For those who doubt.

Hi everyone,

I'm a programmer so you know the story: computer science + math classes in school, truth must be science-backed, etc.

Obviously my views have changed and I really wish I had started on this wonderful journey earlier.

I have met such wonderful people who have helped me be at peace with myself and my surroundings.

Today for fun I decided to look up Reiki on a website called Hacker News, which is where most nerds get their tech news etc. Surprisingly, I saw tons of positive comments about it.

This is the important part, but I'll link the thread too:

> > The ailments that Reiki seems to treat most effectively are those that orthodox medicine struggles to manage: pain, anxiety, chronic disease, and the fear or discomfort of facing not only the suffering of illness but also the suffering of treatment. > > This is key. > > Modern medicine, with the way hospitals and health insurance are run, do not and cannot address, for economic reasons, a pretty important aspect, albeit subjective, which is well-being. > > The figure of the family doctor that takes his time and actually shows you attention has vanished. The average experience of a hospital visit is that of being treated like a number.

Are websites still relevant today for the average person?

I'm talking about normal people like social media users, not businesses who need an online presence.

I read this question on another forum:

> With the platformization of anyone creating content or stuff - it seems like it matters less that I have a site and more that I have a YT channel or a TikTok presence (NEVER!) What are your thoughts? How are websites helping you (or not)?

I'd like to think most people do see websites as relevant and cool, but also something complicated done by techies and not just anyone. It's clear people want to share their thoughts all the time, from personal videos to posts on substack, twitter, tumblr, etc.

The desire to "broadcast yourself" (to use YouTube's old slogan) hasn't disappeared, but maintaining a website's infrastructure is a project in and of itself beyond writing / sharing pictures / videos.
