Need some direction to switch my career in cyber security

I am a backend engineer with almost 6 yrs experience building distributed systems at scale. My main experience is with Java and Python, along with things like microservices, APIs, cloud infrastructure, authentication, etc. I’m considering switching my career toward cybersecurity. I already have a decent understanding of security fundamentals and have worked with security aspects of distributed systems, but I don’t have professional cybersecurity experience yet.

1, What cybersecurity areas would be the best fit for someone with a strong backend/distributed-systems background?

  1. What skills should I learn first?

  2. Are certifications actually useful for making the transition, or would projects/experience matter more?

  3. What would a realistic 6–12 month roadmap look like?

Where I can start to become employable in cyber security field?

What if cloud storage is being used wrong? I built a tool because I stopped seeing the point of syncing everything.

I think we've normalized something

If a file exists on my laptop, we assume it should also exist in the cloud.

Laptop ↔ Cloud.

That's great for files I actively use but what about the other 80–90%?

I don't understand why a file I haven't opened in 18 months needs to occupy space on both my laptop and the cloud.

Is synchronization actually the wrong model for long-term storage?

  • Old projects.
  • University files.
  • Downloaded archives.

I don't want to delete them but I also don't want them consuming 200 GB of my SSD just I might need them someday.

I started wondering:

>

That led me to build CloudBin.

Later:

Cloud → restore → Local SSD

I'm using rclone underneath, rather than trying to reinvent cloud-storage support.

This file is no longer local, but I still own it, and my computer should remember how to get it back

CloudBin is an early open-source experiment around that idea.

Currently:

  • Linux
  • rclone
  • Google Drive tested
  • Python
  • early MVP
  • use non-critical files

GitHub:

PyPI:
https://pypi.org/project/cloudbin/

But I'm more interested in the discussion than the stars. Is this actually a useful distinction, or am I just reinventing something that already exists?

And more importantly:

Would you trust a tool to remove your local file after uploading and verifying it to cloud storage?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who manage multiple TB of data.

Tell me why this is a terrible idea.

Full disclosure: I'm the person who started building an open-source prototype around this idea. I'm posting because I want criticism of the concept.
