how are fresh grads supposed to get experience when every job wants experience?

genuine question because i feel like i’m missing something here HAHA

i recently graduated with a biomed degree from a private uni. my uni didn’t really provide internships, so after graduating i wanted to actually build a portfolio related to what i studied and get some proper hands-on lab experience.

started applying to labs, hospitals, diagnostic companies etc and eventually landed a role that was advertised along the lines of specimen reception / assistant lab tech.

thought okay nice, finally putting the degree to use

ended up doing data entry all day

the funny part is the actual lab is literally right in front of me. i’m basically doing the pre-lab/admin side while watching the lab work happen 5 metres away HAHAHA

so i spoke to my manager/hr because they were actively hiring for lab roles on jobstreet at the time, and asked if there was a possibility of moving into the lab since that was much more aligned with my qualification and what i wanted to gain experience in.

was told i needed at least 1 year of experience first.

which brings me to my question:

WHERE ARE WE SUPPOSED TO GET THE EXPERIENCE

a lot of the lab roles i’ve been looking at ask for 1-2 years of experience even for pretty junior positions. but if fresh grads aren’t considered because we don’t have experience… where exactly does year 1 come from??

and i don’t mean this in a “i have a degree therefore i deserve this job” way at all. some of my colleagues took completely different education routes and are obviously perfectly capable of doing their jobs. it just made me realise that this industry seems way more experience-based than i expected, and now i’m wondering how people actually get their foot in the door in the first place.

i’ve applied to quite a few labs/hospitals too but mostly radio silence so far

so for people in sg who graduated from private unis without internships, especially biomed/life sciences — how did you actually get your first relevant job?

because apparently i need experience to get experience so that i can finally acquire the experience required to get experience
