Solved: Apple Watch Family Setup + Mint Mobile "Unable to Configure Cellular Plan" workaround
I'm posting this because I couldn't find this documented anywhere after spending about 20 hours with Apple, Mint, and T-Mobile support. If someone finds this six months from now, hopefully it saves them the same frustration.
After spending 20+ hours between Apple, Mint, T-Mobile phone support, and multiple T-Mobile stores, I wanted to post what finally worked in case it saves another parent from the same nightmare.
Goal
- Parent has Mint Mobile iPhone.
- Parent is the Apple Family Sharing organizer.
- Child has a new Apple Watch SE Cellular.
- Child does NOT have an iPhone.
- Wanted Family Setup so child could call, text, and share location.
The problem
Every attempt to set up Family Setup from my Mint iPhone failed with: "Unable to Configure Cellular Plan"
Mint support said they don't support Apple Watch.
T-Mobile repeatedly reprovisioned the watch, including manually provisioning the IMEI.
Nothing fixed it.
What didn't work
- Resetting the watch.
- Re-pairing.
- New eSIM.
- T-Mobile manually provisioning the IMEI.
- Hours with Tier 2 support.
- Multiple T-Mobile stores.
What DID work
We borrowed my daughter's grandmother's iPhone (Spectrum Mobile).
- Pair the watch to the Spectrum iPhone.
- Choose Set Up for a Family Member.
- Activate the T-Mobile Standalone Apple Watch plan.
- Verify LTE works (calls/texts work independently).
- Erase the watch but choose to KEEP the cellular plan.
- Pair the watch again using my Mint iPhone.
- Complete Family Setup.
After doing this, the watch finally paired to my Mint iPhone while keeping the already-activated T-Mobile standalone cellular plan.
Calls, texts, and LTE continued working.
My theory
This is only a theory, but it appears there are two separate steps:
- Installing/activating the Apple Watch eSIM.
- Managing an already-provisioned watch.
Mint appears to fail at step 1, but once the standalone plan is already installed, the watch can be managed from the Mint iPhone.
Before you return your watch...
If you're getting: "Unable to Configure Cellular Plan"
and you have:
- Mint Mobile
- Apple Watch Family Setup
- T-Mobile Standalone Watch plan
...try activating the watch on a supported iPhone first, then erase it while keeping the cellular plan, and finally pair it back to your Mint iPhone.
I can't promise it'll work for everyone, but it saved us from returning the watch after days of frustration.
Hope this helps someone.
