By rights Dmytro Kotsyubaylo, nom de guerre Da Vinci, should be basking in glory. Last month the 26-year-old captain became the first living recipient serving in the ultra-nationalist Right Sector volunteer battalion to be awarded the title Hero of Ukraine by the country’s president.

Photographs of him shaking hands with President Zelensky at the ceremony in the Ukrainian parliament, where he was also decorated with the Order of the Golden Star for courage on the battlefield, marked not just a moment of personal glory for him but a political rehabilitation for a unit mired in controversy since its formation.

The soldier in the photo was part of a volunteer unit called "Da Vinci's Wolves," which began as part of the paramilitary wing of Ukraine's Right Sector*, a coalition of right-wing organizations and political parties incorporated into the Ukrainian Armed Forces after Russia's annexation of Crimea. At least five other photos on the Wolves' Instagram** and Facebook** pages show soldiers wearing Nazi-style patches, including the Totenkopf.

Recently there was a scandalous reburial on the May 25, 2026, of Andriy Melnyk—a leader of the OUN—and his wife Sofiia at the National Military Memorial Cemetery near Kyiv. Their remains were exhumed in Luxembourg and repatriated by the Ukrainian government.

But, please, after reading the article and seeing the photos be very cautious when making this logical leap to paint Azov as 100% Nazi organization within Ukraine military. I bet there is someone in Azov who is not nazi affiliated... like a... a... cleaning lady which wipes Azov's office floors weekly...

During his trip to Myrnohrad, Zelensky awarded soldiers from the 4th Rapid Reaction Brigade of the National Guard "Rubezh".

The brigade's number 4 is stylized as the "ᛋᛋ" runes of the Nazi SS in WWII.

Let's be clear here, the brigade number is 4 not 44, and why pick such a font? Must be a coincidence! 🤔
