Guide to surviving Greater Noida
Hi all,
I've been living in Central Greater Noida for 16 years now. I'm 31, unmarried, work remotely, and live with my family. Below is a no-nonsense guide to surviving this city for someone of my demographic.
Find your crowd. Greater Noida has a lot of decent people, but you don't come across them often because they go to Noida or Delhi for all their needs. This is perhaps hit or miss, as avenues to meet people are very limited. If you're in a good society, this happens naturally; otherwise, try joining a club or gym and hope it works out for you.
Avoid the locals. That brings us to the second most important point: how do you avoid the locals? Don't get into quarrels with them. They have an ego problem. If you do get stuck in one, just speak nicely and smile. Try to get out of the conversation ASAP.
Fun and frolic. For all fun-related needs, it's better to visit Noida or Delhi (sometimes Gurgaon too, if possible). These places are anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour away. On most weekends, traffic is free-flowing, so the drive isn't that bad. But it's not possible to travel every weekend or for every need. What then?
Activities in the city. Greater Noida has pretty much everything that an average locality in Delhi has. You will find all kinds of restaurants, malls, quick delivery apps, shops, liquor stores, gyms, banks, etc. for your daily needs, so on most days you're covered. The biggest perk of living in Greater Noida is its wide roads, open spaces, and trees. If you love going for a run, a walk, or a gedi in the evening with a beer in hand, you'll definitely enjoy it.
Surviving after dark. Established sectors and apt complexes are very safe nowadays, a stark contrast to what they were 15–20 years ago. However, I would still be cautious because it's Delhi NCR at the end of the day. Don't loiter alone after dark, and definitely avoid public transport.
Outstation connectivity. Noida airport is functional. For now, all major cities are connected. In the coming years, you may not need to visit the Delhi airport at all, as the network will only strengthen with time. For trains and buses, Delhi is currently the only viable option.
Dating. The dating pool is not that great. If you're single, educated, and looking to date quality people, it's better to look for potential partners in Noida, Delhi, or Gurgaon. If you're married, this is anyway not a parameter.
Overall, there are definitely some inconveniences. It may take some time to find your crowd, or you may have to travel a lot for good fun or dating. But that is offset by lighter traffic, no waterlogging during rains, green belts, affordable housing, and a relaxed pace of life. If you're looking to always be amidst the action, then perhaps Greater Noida is not for you. Staying here requires a car, travel time, loads of planning, and a massive recalibration of expectations.
Enjoy the city! Make the most of it. It isn't that bad.
