Software Engineer with opportunity to attend medical school, possible to leverage dual background?

I have a chance to attend a US MD program at a research institution (not well-known but still good) and interested in doing AI research / contributing to clinical AI literature during or after school (whether in the summer or in-between medical school years)

Obviously I would have to focus on boards and exams but wondering how I can still contribute my engineering background, or if this is even realistic.

I have always wanted to be a physician-technologist but others have told me to just work at a biotech startup (easier said than done, and I also want the didactic and clinical education as well).

The counter to this is that I am already much, much older than my incoming M1 classmates and I wonder if this is just the fanciest way of being unemployed and a student
