W204 C200 CDI ESL failure + emulator fix (cost included)
Had a no-start issue on my Mercedes-Benz C200 CDI where the car was completely dead on key insert no dash lights, no crank, no ESL unlock sound. Both keys did the same thing.
At one point it randomly came back to life after turning the steering wheel side to side, which pretty much confirmed it was an ESL (Electronic Steering Lock) issue.
Got a mobile tech out who diagnosed it and installed an ESL emulator. While he was working on it, the ESL actually fully failed (no response at all), so he had to access and code it directly rather than just a simple plug-in job.
Car now:
- Starts instantly every time
- No delay on ignition
- No more ESL noise (as expected with emulator)
Total cost: $500 AUD
From what I’ve seen, that seems to be within the normal range for emulator installs here.

The HS8s sound amazing but sounds very echoey. I've purchased eggshell acoustic foam 10 pcs (40x40cm) from AWE. Need advice on how and where to place them.
